I have hit on a way to vacuum pack my rice stores. I fill 1 quart mason jars with uncooked rice Then bake them in the oven set to 220 degrees F after about 10 minutes I remove the jars and seal the lids. When they cool the lids suck down the same as they do when regular canning. Vacuum packed...

I have acquired some 5 gallon buckets from Dunkin Donuts and purchased mylar bags and O2 absorbers. I have some food (rice, sugar) already and have an order from LDS coming for many things (wheat, oatmeal, potato flakes, etc). I think I read on this forum a thread talking about storing several...

How can I tell that the oxygen absorber I put in with my rice is doing it's job? When can I expect maximum oxygen removal? I know I won't get a "vacuum seal" look (air being nearly 80% nitrogen) to see that it's working. And I don't want to open a mylar bag 5 years from now and find that...

I had read something about my question a few weeks ago, but searched and couldnt find it again... I just did my very first mylar bags with o2 absorbers. I did about 20 gal bags with everything from rice to sugar, to powdered milk. I bought the mylar and o2 absorbers as a kit off of amazon...I...

The last preps that I sealed up had about 6-8 inches or so of extra mylar at the top. I put in the O2 absorber, pushed out the air and then sealed. Am I compromising my preps by allowing the extra mylar? Should I have cut the bags so that there was less extra space. Thanks

I have a lot of mylar sealed foods, but recently picked up 2000lbs of wheat & another 1000lbs of rice and beans...I am thinking a foodsaver vacuum sealer might be easier than doing mylar with o2 absorbers, is there a downside to using a foodsaver bag ? I will be storing the bags in opaque food...

Hi there! I finally jumped on the bandwagon this week and got some buckets filled with rice and beans in mylar with oxygen absorbers. I'm not sure whether I got this in the right forum or not but my question is this: 2 of the bags of mylar appeared to not make an air-tight seal. I'm wondering...

Hello to everyone, found this site last week and love it. This is my first post. Me and the wife started to try using mylar and O2 absorbers. Theres a little learning curve as we have seen. We have 1 gallon bags and with 300cc absorbers. We try to get all the air out but it still seems to have...
