Question Pledge of Allegiance & Awana (Church help)

Advertise Here

ETA: Decided to go ahead and teach it to them after discussion with my husband. Thank you so much for all of your words of wisdom and help!

Hi Friends,

Need some advice from my fellow Christian parents on here.

I found a new church. Nice enough people that I've met so far, the spirit of the Lord is very much there and I can't tell you how happy I was when the kids got out from Sunday School telling me how they learned about "The Good Samaritan"
It is also a very service oriented church, and what do you know - also "Baptist".

The church has a group called "Awana's" for kids. I went tonight with the kids to check it out, and they had a blast.
I must admit though, I am a little bothered by some of the 'goals' they must do to earn their vests.

1 is recite the Pledge of Allegiance, the other is to Pledge Allegiance to the Awana Club.

Serious red flags to me.

I have mentioned before I do not Pledge Allegiance to the flag, and I feel most strongly about that now that I have become a Christian.

For those who care why I feel that way here is a c/p off a blog that pretty much sums up my thoughts:http://www.christianmarriage.com/hom...article&sid=11
Now, on to the problem that I ask my wise christian parents here in this forum.

I really feel strongly about this, but I also don't want to screw it up for my kids as this looks like a good opportunity.

I found this pledge that I don't object to:
Quote:
I pledge allegiance to the Bible, God's Holy Word, I will make it a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path and will hide its words in my heart that I might not sin against God.
Do you think it would be inappropriate to ask the Awana leader if my kids can learn/memorize something like this, instead of the pledges to the Awana flag and US Flag?

Or do you think I will get looked at like a kook?

Feeling as I do, I think I would rather pass than compromise - but again, I'm not sure if that is the right answer either.

I hate having to bother you people with this, but sometimes I don't really know how to handle this church stuff

Thanks and much love in advance!!!

MotherEarth, I say good for you. I couldn't agree with you more. I am a father of seven, and I can say that the most important thing in the world for your kids to learn is that God and His Word are the two most important things.

I don't think that the Awana group is trying to brainwash your kids or anything, but just like every other institution in this world, it is established by sinful people who get their priorities mixed up, including church groups.

It is very refreshing to read your post, doubtless many will think you are going overboard. I think you obviously have discernment here.

I'll pray for you for wisdom, sister.

A lot of government and school functions begin with the Pledge of allegiance. Its sort of a societal norm. No need to make your kid stand out over nothing. Be careful not to impart this to your kid too soon for them to understand.

I'm sorry, I don't quite understand the bolded sentence.

Thanks for both of your replies.

my daughter has attended private Christian skool since K5
(her graduates in May!!)
they pledge to the US flag/Christian flag/Bible....every day!!!

i think they just trying to incorporate the three pillars...
God/country/(duty)/family....
i think it good to have allegiance to all three Mother.
and AWANA(s) a wonderful group as well.
no idol worship there....i can assure you.
good for your kids that you have found them a church home..
(good for you 2 Mother) may they rise and call you blessed....(see proverbs 31)

My children also attend a Christian school are pledge to the US Flag and Christian Flag, daily.

I also agree that they are being taught allegiance to all of those. I would not be concerned, just watch to be sure that the God, Jesus Christ and the Bible are being taught.

I just wanted to say Mother, my wife and I weren't blessed with children. I re-read your post and saw it was to parents so take my opinion as you wish. I'm still happy you found a church though

I say that if you do not feel comfortable enough with it, then you shouldn't do it.

On the other hand, is this the third or fourth church you've tried? Have you thought that maybe, deep down, that you are actually trying to look for reasons not to attend? I'm not trying to belittle you or anything, as I have much respect, but think about that for just a minute. Try looking past the small nitpick stuff and try looking at the things that should be paid attention to.

EDIT: *MAN, that was harder to say than I thought. I just realized that I drilled myself with that one*

LOL Hubb, you're cute.
I knew that was kind of the way it would sound to some of you. And for the record its the 3rd church I've tried! lol

I really like the church - this is completely seperate from the church. It is called the AWANA program (Approved Workmen are not ashamed. From Timothy 2:15) and it is through the church and for kids.

I put that blog post up there because that is most how I feel but to put it in my own words why *I* think pledging allegiance to a flag is wrong (and I felt this way even as an atheist minus the God-stuff) :

I believe we are all humans on this Earth worthy of respect, and love. People are just potential followers of Christ who haven't had their 'time' yet.

I just feel so much more strongly of that now as a follower of Christ. I think pledging allegiance to your country is dangerous, because my first allegiance should be God and serving man kind as much as possible.
I love America, but I don't think our Government and the flag that represents it is any more Godly than Iran's.

Yeah, yeah I know - flame away. Our history speaks volumes though.

Perhaps I am over thinking. I was raised not to say the P.O.A. for pretty much that reason and it is something that 'feels' right to me.

And I post here with all my church problems because, as I've said - I don't really know many Christians irl.

Ok Hubb, you're on my poo list now

I'm sorry Ax4jc, your opinion is most welcome and wanted! I didn't mean to be exclusive, I just figured most people who weren't parents wouldn't care.

You know, I think what I am really afraid of is getting my kids sucked into something that resembles the kids programs from the documentary "Jesus Camp".
Cardboard cut out of President Bush and all.
P.O.A. I would probably feel squickish about, but pledging to an AWANA flag also...I dunno. It just feels weird and wrong.

But so did praying at first.

Sorry, but I didn't get any further than that

No seriously, I'm not trying to be on the poo list. I guess I said to you what I did because I've done it. I realized that I would stop going to church for little nitpick stuff. But then I realized that it is just the Devil attacking me and the family. I currently do not attend regular church, but I seem to have made myself closer to God in private (and with family and close friends) than I ever did going to a formal church.

MotherEarth,

Go with your heart on this. If you aren't comfortable with it, then so be it. Nobody should try to push stuff like that onto others.

My only thought is to think of the Coin of Tribute. "Render that to Cesar which is Cesar's and that to the Lord which is the Lords"

Best of luck to you.

Ok you guys....

I've been talking to my husband about this (ex army) and he said that he would honestly prefer they learn the P.O.A.
He said that just because the government is corrupt, does not mean that the ideals behind the flag (truth, liberty, justice for ALL) are corrupt.
He also said, in the end - they are just 'words'. God's words come first etc.

So, thank you guys for helping me

I will just teach it to them, but be sure to impress upon them that all of the world's people are just as loved by our God regardless of the flag they bear.

Raising kids who love God is such a fine line between being overzealous/fundamentalist and too 'liberal' and missing the eternal message.
It is so hard for me. I don't want to screw anything up. Sometimes I feel like it is the blind leading the blind. Well, I hope they survive me!

Anyways, prayers that I will be able to teach them well are always appreciated.

Much love and thanks to you guys!

Motherearth when I was a child I attended an awana club, and had a complete blast. If it wasn’t for the religious teaching I would have my kids going to one, once they got old enough to attend. From what I remember about them, it’s a very good place for children to learn things about the bible that should stick with them for a long time. I would just make sure you that what they are learning is in fact in accordance with what you believe.

Yeah, church is cool, except for that whole organized religion thing.
