It's funny how people react to the word "Survivalism". These practices were not that uncommon for my grandparents. I think no matter what happens it is good for people to learn to be more self-sufficient. Learn gardening, have some extra food, have a plan for bad situations. These things are not crazy to me. It's common sense. Better to be prepared than not.

Back about 20+ years ago, the liberal media had a grand old time focusing on a relatively few mostly racist paramilitary groups in the woods in Montana and Idaho, forever tainting the word "survivalist" in the minds of the public.
There do remain many "survivalists" who think all that they need for TEOTWAWKI is a good gun, comfortable boots, and a lot of ammo. So when the media is able to find those folks, they are able to perpetuate that scary sterotype. "Crisis preparedness" and a few other choice terms are more palatable to the proper sensitivities of the modern sophisticate. And indeed, more and more of those well-bred, politically right-thinking individuals are coming around to the logic and intelligence of being ready for crisis. Particularly since the world is floundering in disasters and potential disasters today. Just don't suggest they are dabbling in "survivalism."

When I tell people I'm a survivalist, I also mention that I prep for natural disasters (seeing as they're the most likely to happen) and leave out any details of other things I plan on surviving.
Welcome along to the site, great first post.

I believe the word survivalist has been corrupted by sheep to mean a "nut in camouflage running around in the woods with a rifle".
Unfair and inaccurate I know. I don't bring up the subject and would never describe myself using the S word.I catch enough crap for just carrying a pistol 24/7 which I would never bring up except for the fact I'm a long time weapon instructor and besides trying to drum up a new client and am a teacher at heart.Sheep don't like teeth. You can't just blurt out you have teeth without causing panic. You ease into it.A few times at gatherings a sheep accused me of being paranoid or afraid and that's why I carry a gun. When I explained I carry to have the option to save you or your wife or your kids from danger but that I would not throw my life away fighting armed men with just a smile. That usually gets them thinking. From there you can bring up being prepared.I'm from South Florida and you need to be prepared for hurricanes.I went 6 months without power after Andrew but I had a generator food fuel attack dogs.I was ready so no problem. Many had a real problem. Being prepared is smart so I suggest you leave out the label "Survivialist" to strangers and just explain basic preparedness to people you don't know well. |
