Your only problem with the SKS is... you may like it more then your AK's...and want another one...IMO I have had several SKS's over the years, long ago... great gun for the money...

Vergeltung,
If you're taller than most of the people in the country of origin, I recommend you try out a 1" buttpad. It really helps with getting a good sight picture. The one on my paratrooper even has the hole so you can still access the cleaning kit.

edit: maybe I should have said "recoil pad" Here's one like I have. No affiliation with seller, blah, blah.

Default glad I broke down the bolt

seriously glad I broke down the bolt tonight. know I know what you guys mean about firing pin rattle. before, not so much, now yeah, a nice rattle.

lotta cosmoline in there. more proof (in my mind) that this piece was largely unfired. and, BTW, no one can tell me that firing pin retainer pin would be an easy "field operation". talk about having to whack that thing out, and then back in!!

still, a great acqusition IMO. glad I got it.

I seriously want an SKS.....it hurts me that in my neck of the woods (NY) WASR AKs are cheaper and easier to find and SKSs are virtually non-existent or are $600+ for used ones.......man, I wish I was old enough in the early 90's to get a whole bunch of cheap SKSs.

check GunBroker.com. they are always plentiful there, and the prices are OK. that's where I got mine.

Yeah, I will keep an eye out for them. How about gun shows? Are they inexpensive and/or plentiful there? I don't have access to many gun shows because of where I live....

Quote: EDIT: the cleaning rod rattles like a ghost in chains. anyone have that problem as well? the rods on my AKs are in tight, but this does not seem to "screw in" to anything. maybe the female part in the stock is missing or damaged? again, thanks in advance. End Quote

I had the same problems on my Yugo, and saw where you re-mounted a bayonet. Maybe try some shrink wrap tubing on the cleaning rod (where it fits through the front guide) if it still rattles. You could make an attachment point for the other end by epoxying a nut into the stock to screw into...should be able to access the attachment point through the bayonet slot or magazine cutout.

Also, I haven't seen any mention of Tech Sights yet. My apologies if I've overlooked someone's post. Might be worth a look if you like peep / aperture sights: http://www.tech-sights.com/sks.htm The T100 is like an M-16A1 setup, and the T200 are similar but more adjustable, like an M-16A2. I hear the Appleseed people think pretty highly of them, and am happy with mine.

Congratulations on a fine weapon, regardless.

thanks! yes, you are right about the Appleseed folks and the tech sights. I just might have to look into that if I can't qualify in April.

just an update; I got some really nice (brand new) SKS stripper clips from Center Fire Systems. cheap, and not even MilSurp, they are brand new, and freshly machined. sweet!

I practiced with a few, and they are great. one caveat though, if you are not counting carefully they DO hold 11 rounds!! somewhat problematic if you have the standard 10-round fixed box mag like I do.

Loaded a bunch up for a range day tomorrow. Centerfire is a great place. I have never seen such great prices on so many cool things. (I got 2 swiss rain ponchos for almost nothing.)

awesome. what's not to like?
