Default Personal survival kit I put together

Example of a personal survival kit I put together. The survival kit started out as an empty first aid plastic box.

Inside of the kit I put:
1 gallon zip lock bag - good for waterproofing your kit and can be used as a canteen
water purification tablets from readypro.org - http://readypro.org/
Paper
Pen
Small first aid kit
Hand crank Flashlight from edcdepot.com - http://edcdepot.com/
Multi-tool

Great kit mate. May I suggest a new product to you for storing water?

http://bepreparedtosurvive.com/Aqua-...0Container.htm

Little pricey, but IMO worth it for is ability to easily reseal, the fact that it's marked for use with those Aqua Mire Tabs, Grommets for carrying, and it's thicker plastic, that's why it's in my SK. Folds flat too.

Don't forget to bring along vaseline, it can be used for medical reasons, getting unstuck in emergency situation, or used to start a fire.
Oh, how about adding a high protein energy bar.

I can't remember if the multi-tool included a knife, if not I'd put one of those in there.

No fire starter? And how about a length of 50 lb. woven fishing line, say 50 ft.?

Howdy Kev,
I am new to your boards, but have been practical survivalist for many years as my granparents, uncles, and even a cousin in the Ozarks in Arkansas were/are farmers.
Well to get to the point, I have been very scientifically inclined, and have always excelled in science. Well a very simple foolproof way to start a fire is to carry a plain ole ziploc bag (size depending on where you are going, do you have room for surplus, etc... take sawdust and parrafin wax and make your own "fire log-type" material but use only about half the amount of wax used by the commercial items (this allows faster starting, from my experience), and I carry a 1 gallon bag of this in "pin-pong ball" and smaller chunks (quarter sized balls). For an ignition source, I carry a 500 gram container of Potassium Permanganate (this is a powerful oxidizer, so it should be stored in a seperate container from ALL fuels), and a 1 pint bottle of plain ole glycerin (like from the drugstore for constipation relief).
You make a small pile (fist to double fist size depends on how wet or green the fuel you are starting is), you place about 1 tablespoon of the potassium permanganate on the "wax - sawdust tinder" material, then after the containeris closed and properly stored away from the fire area, add about 1/2 to 1 ounce of glycerin slowly from a height of at least 6 to 8 inches as the reaction burns very hot and spontaneously combusts burning like a flare and is hot enough to start the tinder and even green wood.
Hope this helps someone for future use, but only by those that know how to safely handle strong oxidizers (about the strength of pool chlorine), and the potassium permanganate is purpelish crystals varying in size depending on the brand. I can be found in some drug stores as an antiseptic, or online. Remeber, safety first.
Warm regards to you and yours, from me and mine, Walter

razor blade/s

sewing needle/s and a little thread

fish hook/s and a little line

a very few aspirins
An aspirin could make all the difference to someone having a heart attack.

These things are just too lightweight and easy to pack to leave out.

Its always nice to have stage 1 [lights from a spark] tinder on hand for my firesteels. Snare wire is another lightweight item that will get you some dinner. Also the Ramen noodle flavor packs are just boullion crushed up and make your possum or coon taste more better.

Apparently so, I assume it's in the video 'cause it's not listed on the post, as I read the text but have not watched the video (takes too long on my machine.)

OBTW great site here. I spend altogether too much time on it....
You're doing great work...

Hi,

Nice kit.

Like the Super Glue idea.

Adding to what you have shown and to what I have found that others have written here:

Perhaps one would like to include some signaling devices such as a mirror and a good whistle.

Also I think some kind of strong string or paracord is a good idea, too. Several cables ties is a good idea too, I think. They are quite strong and take very little weight or space.

Finally, if this a survival kit is not limited to rural / woods survival I'd like to suggest some back up money -- bills and coins.

Default Survival Kits

One may want to make that two space blankets/ heat sheets in a kit.

Granted it is bulkier, however the space blanket with a colored backing and grommets are a good idea, both as a basic blanket and sheltering combination.

Even a simple windbreak helps. Granted size will be a factor, Include a back up for both fire making and water. Trash bags are a good idea.

remember to ration your sweat and not your water. Water is best carried in the body first and then in canteens/water carriers.

Having worked with search and rescue teams in Oregon in the late 1970's Remember to think about having an EDC kit, a 24 hour kit and an 72 hour kit that you can carry, in addition to your longer term supplies and tools.

Would it be just easier for him to put a liter of water in a bag, and mark it with a sharpie then empty the bag, and put it in his kit?

Fine kit none the less.

I noticed that there is also a book of matches in the MRE accessory packet.

Squashing the tape roll would give you a little extra space for something like a mini-bag with a couple vaseline soaked cotton balls, or even just a few plain cotton balls used as space filler in the kit. Use them for firestarting, as earplugs to block wind or in wound cleaning, all sorts of things.

many moons ago I said I would post pictures of the vehicle kits I was putting togehter and completely forgot -- but here goes............

along with everything pictured I also included hats and gloves and mittens (plus there are 4 of the space blankets in each box).... the plastic container (gotten from crystal light), wrapped with about 3ft of duct tape, is full of lint for fire starting purposes
