Default How do I go about getting a Shetler's Wholesale Catalog

Advertise Here

I'm nowhere near Indiana and I know they don't have a phone. Is it a free catalog or do you have pay for it? I don't want to mail a request and have it kicked without a reply.

If it's true wholesale, you probably need a business license or at least a state tax permit.

Thanks, I couldn't find that number, then someone on another board said they didn't have a phone as it was an Amish business.

My Shetler's catalog finally came in. If you're planning to live without/very limited electricity you should get this catalog. Their pricing seems fair, they seem to be a great alternative to Lehman's.

Thanks for the thread on this business. Here's what I was able to dig up:

Shetler's Wholesale Co. and you can request a free catalog of general variety merchandise by writing PO Box 8, Geneva, IN 46740 or faxing 260.368.9902.

And my catalog request is on its way!

Shetler's is a wholesale and a retail business. My brother owns it and the products are very good quality. They only have a fax number on their catalog because the majority of their retail business is to the Amish. I have many, many products from Shetler's.

Rancher, I've searched and it appears they do not have a website. I guess contact them by snail mail or fax.

Correct. No website yet. They have been talking about putting their items on Amazon, though. For now, the only way to order is through the catalog which can still be requested at the contact provided.

If they'd like a website I'd be happy to trade my services for products Bet lots of people on here would prefer to shop that way instead of via catalog.

Remember that the Amish will not maintain or monitor a website.

Amish business to the outside world, beyond local sales, almost always goes through a facilitator 3rd party.

It is called wholesale but they deal mainly with Amish farmers. If there is an Amish farmer living near you they probably will have a copy of one or can direct you to someone that has a copy. The cost of the catalogue is $3.00 or that was the price for the 2012 edition.

Doesn't sound to me like the owner is Amish, just that he sells to Amish farmers (from post #7)

I fail to understand why this business deals with the Amish using a FAX, do the Amish have telephone and Faxes?

No, they don't.

The Fax number given for Shetlers means you are not communicating with the actual Amish. You are communicating with a 3rd party that is a facilitator company. Shetlers is a distribution company, not the actual Amish manufacturers.

Ahhh OK, they need us to set them up with a web-based ordering system so they can expand their business and go bankrupt.

Something like that.

I think Yoders, the can bacon people, are the same. Right around all these Amish enclaves are business that sell back and forth with the Amish to the outside world. Lots of them are former Amish who chose not to take up the faith during their late teens. But they still live right down the road from mom and dad. If dad needs a new axe then his non-Amish kid will buy it online for him and deliver it to him once it gets shipped in from UPS. Then dad will make a handmade bookshelf and his kid will put it into a real world storefront or sell it online.

There is this whole secondary industry surrounding the Amish so they can get what they need and sell what they make without having to actually deal with modern technology themselves.

It's also why it is hard to get yourself in on the act buying and selling with Amish. The "perimeter" industry already is in place and mostly connected to the Amish by family ties. Amish dad would rather buy and sell through his non-Amish kid than through an outsider.

Anytime you see Amish goods for sale and you are not standing on Amish land then you are likely dealing with these facilitators, not the actual Amish.

Local small equipment dealer (John Deere) and repair shop was owned by an old order Mennonite family. Although they're not typically as strict as the Amish, they did not have an internet connection. They did have computers to handle inventory but all parts orders to JD went by phone or fax.

John Deere went to an internet only system for it's distributors so the Mennonite family sold it's business to a larger JD dealer with an agreement for the family to stay on as "managers".
