Question Question: North Carolina Gun Laws

Advertise Here

It is my understanding that you don't need a license for a shot gun or rifle and that you do need a license for a handgun and a permit to carry it with you, also I know you can't have fully automatic weapons.

My questions are: Is there is a limit on the number of handguns / rifles you are allowed to own? Do you need a permit for each weapon handgun you buy? Can you buy a semi-automatic weapon and do you need a special permit do get one?

Thanks in advance

Read the links above but I'll answer your Q's.

In NC you need to be 18 to purchase a long gun(rifle or shotgun) that includes semi-auto. You will need a valid ID and be able to pass an instant background check. You can also own a handgun at 18, BUT you can not purchase one until you are 21. Technically you can legally be given a handgun at 18 though.

To buy a handgun in NC you will need to be 21 and get a permit to purchase from your local sheriff dept. You can get up to 5 permits at a time and they are good for five years. In order to get a permit to purchase you fill out an application. You'll need 3 character references who will need to be 21, residents of your county, not related to you by blood or marriage and they must all have different addresses.

To get a concealed carry permit you have to go through a little more. You have to do the same as above plus take a basic handgun safety course and get documentation you completed that. You also have to submit your finger prints to the sheriffs dept.

You can own select fire(full auto) weapons in NC, but you have to go through a lot to do that and it is up to your local sheriff if they will allow it in their county.

You can also get a concealed carry permit that supersedes a permit to purchase.

So, no there is no limit for the amount of firearms you can own. Yes you need a permit for each handgun purchase(you can buy two with each permit). No you do not need a permit to purchase a semi-auto rifle or shotgun.

Or move to SC, it's better here. Private sales of longarms still allowed here.

True true. I used to live in SC and they have it much better. You got a SC ID and can pass a quick background check you can buy what you want.

Really? Figures... yes here in New Hanover county you need three character refs. And you don't get your permits in the mail you have to go out to the sheriffs dept and pick them up.

Quote:
References
Applicants must have three (3) separate character references. Two will be listed within the
application, and the third reference needs to fill out the attached sheet for a written
recommendation. Please list a daytime contact number for your references. We only contact
them Monday - Friday during the hours of 8am and 5pm.
Your references must:
(1) Be at least 21 years of age
(2) Be a resident of New Hanover County
(3) Cannot be related to you, or each other, by blood or marriage
(4) All references must have different addresses from each other and the applicant.
Once you have completed you’re application, you must submit your application to the Civil
Front Desk of the Sheriff’s Office located in Room 122 of the New Hanover County
Courthouse (316 Princess St.). Please allow a MINIMUM of 14 business days to process the
application. The phone number is 798-4200.

The sheriff in NC can deny you a pistol permit if he wants.

The laws are very ambiguous about that and he can deny you if you have no criminal record or anything.

Ive seen it happen.

Originally these laws were designed so the sheriff could deny a pistol permit to blacks, kind of like the old Jim Crow laws, but now they do it all the time.

Now if you go and get your CCW this bypasses the sheriff and he has no say in what guns you have.

If you are gonna be working in Charlotte area, the state line is 12 miles from downtown. So go live in SC. Charlotte/Mecklenburg county is totally controlled by yankees. The saying here is "Charlotte is a northern town in a southern state".

Same in NC. Permits to purchase are only required for handguns.

Are you saying that a local sheriff can issue you a NC carry permit without your going through the state permit procedure?

Is that a permit fee for EACH time you wish to buy a handgun?
Or a blanket permit you just have to get once?

No the sheriff can issue you a pistol purchase permit.

Its supposed to be automatic but the laws are interpreted to mean he can refuse for any reason and he doesn't have to give the reason. In other words, if your skin has too much melanin he can refuse, if one of his deputies shot a relative of yours he can refuse, etc.

The only way to legally purchase a handgun in NC without the permit issued by the sheriff is to get a CCW.

OIC. Weird.

To echo my other question, then, is a pistol purchase permit good for any number of purchases over time, or you have to have one for each time you want to purchase one? If so, is the purchase permit tied to just the specific model of pistol?

One purchase permit is good for purchase of one pistol or several long guns if all those long guns are purchased at the same time.

The permit is not tied to any specific model of pistol.
