I would like to thank Billy Wiliford at Wiliford & Son AC and Heating in Jasper, Texas for the interview.
In this video we discuss generators, how to estimate the size needed, and a couple of different types of generators. |

Good videos, I purchased a Hardy Diesel to replace my gasoline Generator. Hardy used to sell cheap china junk but now they have great quality Perkins Diesels. I have over 10,000 hours on mine and no troubles. If you havnt looked at them for a while check them out again.http://www.hardydiesel.com/diesel-ge...r-8-30-kw.html

I just purchased a used Titan 5500D off of Craigslist. 4800 surge watts and 4200 continues - More than enough to run my freezer, refirgerator, and lights/TV, cable modem. I have propane stove and ventless fireplace so it is all I needed. It is a one cylinder low RPM model (kind like the old Listers) and according to the manufacturer AMerican Fab. it is made in Traveler's Rest near Greenville SC. I like it very much here is the manual for the one I bought and the website for the company. You might find one on ebay as well. Good luck.

I have been searching for storage tank - maybe 25 gallons for a minor SHTF scenario. It looks a like a "gas caddy" type would be best but given the price tag wonder if anyone else has ideas.
Also, since my Titan is a portable it is not meant to sit out in the weather. I am thinking I might want to put this thing about 2-3 feet away from the house (with vent pointing away from house ) and fashion some sort of lean-to type shelter off of the house. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks. |

Here are is a video on how to quieten a generator by adding an additional muffler as well as building a box enclosement. This should cover both motor noise and exhaust noise. I am drawing up my designs now. Would like to know if anyone else has done something similar.

A friend of mine has rescure dogs (Labs) and he has or had at the time anyway as it's been a few years since I've seen him, a small jap pick up truck with high rise camper on the back, inside the truck bed he had installed (he's a PHD so no do it yourselfing with him) a box air tight as relates to fumes not being able to get inside the camper top truck bed, and with sound insulation, he even had a separate fuel door installed for this generator next to the fuel door for gasoline for the vehicle. Reason he did all this, he shows up at a rescue point, it may be hours upon hours perhaps even a day or longer before the dogs are called upon for their part of the rescue, now he cranks up the generator that is used only to power an air conditioner (he lives in the deep south) and the dogs can hang out in the camper area c o o l. I'm sure there is some venting on the outside somewhere, I don't remember where by recollection. SO, one can insulate for both noise and fumes, a generator.
So there. |

Just get a hybrid car. It can power a lot of appliances with the battery, and automatically activates the gas engine to recharge the battery when it's low on electricity.

I thought that a separate board about power etc would be a great idea
|
|

I have felt the same way , it would just be easier to reference and it would be topic specific, so that those that know more about such things would have a forum to really further discussion without all that info being scrambled around the board.

I have two generators, one Honda, the other has a Honda engine. The first is a 3000w Honda. I went through a 14 day outage with this generator. It functioned great. Fridge, lights, TV, cable box, etc... One tank of gas(two gal) lasted 10 hours. What it didn't power was my 1hp well pump. It's not big enough so I never expected it to do so nor did I expect to loose power for 14 days!!! That was enough for me. I saved up the money and bought an additional 13,000w generator with a 20hp Honda engine. This will power my whole house as long as I don't go crazy and turn all the 220 stuff on at the same time. People ask why I didn't trade the 3000 toward the 13000? Well the 13000 gets 1 hour to 1 gal and the 3000 gets 5 hours to 1 gal!! I only run the big one when I need water. The little guy does all other services. It's also nice to be able to throw the small one in the truck bed to bring power where needed. The big boy weighs way to much for even two big guys to lift it. I permanently installed it in my garage. The exhaust is piped outside and I get the benefit of the air cooling discharge heats up my entire garage so it nice and warm in there to work in!

I have two Honda's eu2000I they can be paralleled together for 4000 watts or run independently 15 hours on a gal of gas and extremely quiet. I have a hand pump for water so I like these , they don't make enough noise to draw attention.

Careful. Any sizeable generator must be ventillated, so keeping it covered all the way up is troublesome. Doesn't matter if they are gas, diesel or electric. They over heat very easily, especially in warmer weather. I have run 6,8 and 12 KW's most of my life. Microwave Ovens, Dryers and similar appliances will drain a lot of power from them. |

It would have been nice if the maker of the sound deadening box had a decibel sound meter to document his claims. I have a 5KW generator with a 10hp L Head Tecumseh (not over head valve) and have been told there's little I can do to quiet it. The enclosure might be a good start.

I guess I had better consider getting something bigger than my 7500 watt unit. At least I can keep my freezer and refrigerator going.

AKpredator,
Thanks for the reply. I agree about the ventilation. If you watch the video, you will see that it is fully ventilated with a fan, powered by the generator, and the other side of the box does not go all the way to the ground. So ventilation with this configuration should not be a problem. Let me know if you are seeing something in this design that has a flaw. Thanks. jwh |

We always stack straw bales around the generators when camping. It may not last long term but a quick fix.

Well, I have my little bitty Coleman 1500 watt gen, it's a bit noisy but it's enough to run what's necessary. If you don't open the fridge or freezer ant more than absolutely necessary they will remain cold for quite a while. I just run an extension cord in, plug the fridge in for a while, plug the freezer in for a while, and use battery juice foe TV and radio.
