Default Loads for .30-30 blackpowder

Advertise Here

After deer season, I will try out shooting .30-30 blackpowder loads. I have 150gr bullet casts. Should I go with a lighter one to keep velocity going, like a 130gr or 110gr bullet. Can I get away without a gas check. Are magnum primers a better choice than regular ones? I can assume FFFg is better than FFg. I will be using blackpowder substitutes for this test. Either FFFg pyrodex, FFFg shockey's, or triple seven.

Remember to leave NO airspace under the bullet with blackpowder..bullet needs to be snug against the powder..

1750 fps, that does need a gas check.

Yes Those were 170gr FP cast with a Hornady gascheck. Smokeless powder though----not black. But they did work great.
