Gettysburg PA and surrounding Cumberland Valley. Located about 1-1.5 hours from Baltimore, 20 minutes from Camp David, 2 hours from Washington, 2 hours from Philly, 3.5 hours from Pittsburg, 40 minutes from Fort Detrick in Frederick MD mentioned earlier, and also 40 minutes from Harrisburg PA (capital with strong naval presence)
I actually work down the road from Ft. Detrick in Frederick MD, and while I love Frederick and think it's a fantastic town, I hate working near that base. Especially with the Anthrax.
Pros:
Fairly rural
Cannot be developed heavily due to plethora of historical landmarks
Average weather conditions, no extreme colds or extreme hots (I love living along this latitude, weather is so nice)
Decent amount of game and water
15 min from Michaux state forest and quite a bit of wilderness
No big military institutions directly
Several rivers and streams, large lake and a few ponds
Roads in all directions for bugging out
Small population, 7.5k
Lotta country folk around here
Big proprieter of apples, so a lot of farming in the area
Close to some mountainous areas.
Cons:
40 min from camp david, though I don't know that camp david would be a huge target
There is a naval depot north of chambersburg
There is also a strong naval population in Harrisburg and surrounding areas
Large touristy area
I'm still debating on whether or not I'd want to stay here. Being fairly close to several big cities makes me want to go somewhere else. West Virginia maybe or even Western Maryland. Or even further west out by Colorado, Kentucky, Wyoming. Hard to do research on individual cities in the U.S.
