I can't speak to the price range though they are getting expensive out here too but the Yugos are fine.
I don't put much thought into the whole not chrome thing even if you were using corrosive ammo. Just clean it properly. The Yugo's are heavier that a Norinco. They workmanship is usually excellent. |

A chrome lined bore is neither and advantage or disadvantage,The main advantage of Chrome is being much harder and impervious than steel, it will hold up to wear a lot longer giving a much longer effective lifespan of a barrel. Its also much easier to clean as powder residue and lead will not work into the pores, like it does in bare steel.
When you chrome line a bore you have to accommodate the extra thickness of the chrome layer, so they slightly oversize bores for barrels intended for chroming. This is why chrome lined barrels tend to not be as accurate. Any time you put a layer of something over any contour IE the rifling, it magnifies it, so any imperfection in the barrel surface is made more so with the extra layer that adds to the surface. Chrome lining also does not protect the crown, which can have a major impact of accuracy of a barrel. Chrome lining is not a necessity,it may extend barrel life a little longer and make cleaning a bit easier but to the average shooter it's not a big deal. Most likely you will wear out before you wear and SKS barrel out with normal use and proper cleaning. |

$450 is a bit on the high side price wise even for an unissued Yugo. You will find them to be very well made. If you shoot corrosive ammo you will have to clean everything with hot soapy water before using normal gun cleaning methods. Other than that the non chrome lined barrel is no problem.

$450 for an unissued M59/66 is a rip-off IMO, even in today's market. Don't get gouged.
Don't sweat the non-chromed barrel, though, when you do find a reasonably priced one. Last edited by lilc; 06-07-2009 at 01:35 AM.. |

Should be able to find any good used or still in cosmo yugo for less than $300 even at todays prices. I would NEVER pay more than $300 for ANY SKS.
You do not need a chrome lined barrel unless you are going full auto, period. If you get a Yugo, cut the grenade launcher/bayonet lug crap off the front sight assembly, depin and unscrew the adapter off, get a good flash suppressor to screw back on and remove a couple pounds from it. It is a simple, interesting afternoon project. You will need to heat it up real good tho to get it all off the barrel, and have fun getting the trimmed down from sight assembly back on, but can be done with a block of wood and a hammer. Really cleans it all up. I guess you could keep the bayonet on it, but i have yet to get attacked by a group of prarie dogs, try not to let them get close enough! ![]() |
