In the event of a emp, would led lights work? I know my led flashlights(coast) have a small circut chip in them. It never occurred to me they might not.

A basic led off the parts shelf should be fine. I think the high power ones you find in torches and head lamps tend to have switching circuits that pulse the led to give what our eyes perceive as a brighter light. It also controls the current to the led to stop them burning out... Lots of quick, high intensity pulses that give a higher peak light output while keeping the average power dissipation within limits.
Something like that anyway ![]() |

I am sure you are right.
Like many I have switched to small, bright, high output led's. These are what I mainly stock batteries for. I have a couple regular lights, but limited batteries for them. I am seeing a possible hole in my (and probably others) preps. |

Coleman makes battery powerd lanterns.Great lite they give off.

I have stocked fuel, and mantels for coleman propane lantern.
Also have some Hurricane laterns and fuel. |

From what I have read LED lights should be fine but that is what I have read not what I know for sure. Personally, I am keeping a couple of regular flashlights that I have recieved as gifts with the regular bulbs and several with the LED's as that is what I buy. Also, I am buying an LED lantern but also keeping my propane powered lantern just in case. It can be a pain but why not spend twenty or thirty bucks and keep a couple plain lights and a pack of batteries? You can always use the batteries.

build a small faraday cage and put all your prep electronics in it.
it wouldn't have to be large at all, unless you plan to store a lot of stuff. I'm thinking a trunk the size of a small fridge. i read somewhere(can't remember where...) a guy put a bunch of spare electronic preps(laptop, solar charger, lights, etc) into a metal garbage can in his basement, sealed it shut, and grounded it. i thought this would be a poor mans faraday cage. peace al |

Get a metal trash can, place a rubber pad on the bottom then put whatever inside it inside a wooden box 1st (or thick cardboard), then toss on the lid and don't worry about it.

Wires being attached to your device are what serve as ana antenna in my understanding. Unless yuor flashlight is plugged in recharging, it wold not have the length of circuit necessary to act as an antenna for EMPs long wavelength.
Somebody even theorized that devices with short duck foot antennas, like FRS radios and handheld CBs, might be relatively unaffected. I don't know, mine are living in a steel ammo can. They mentioned less than 30 inches on antennas. I know some short antennas are coiled, so even if the antenna itself is only 10 in. the wrpped wire inside it might be 30 in. |

I was thinking of a grounded metal trash can, packing my electronics in plastic peanuts so none touch the walls of my Faraday cage.

A metal trash can should work great for all your electronic gear. Just line it with corrugated cardboard. I don't see any reason why it would need to be grounded.

I have some LED lights, they work ok now. But candle lanterns and oil lamps can always work, and you can make your own candles and oil. No reason not to cover all bases, or all bets, to defeat murphy.
