I'm looking for a decent, well priced tactical scope for my AR-15 and came across one on e-bay by NCStar. Its about $120-$130, quick release, 3-9x42 power, rangefinder illuminated retical and other nice stuff. I've just never heard of this brand before and was wandering if its worth the money. If there is one thing I can't stand its a scope that can't hold zero. Please let me know what you have heard about this scope.

i am a NcStar dealer and i can say that they are great scopes. i am guessing you are referring to a sec3942r, but that is too much for that specific scope. i sell those for around 85 bucks... if its going on an AR-15, i suggest a scope that is designed specifically for that rifle. NcStar makes a few. i suggest a secaq3942, or a secaq430b if you are looking for a compact scope that looks good on an AR-15. the secaq3942 is like the one you asked about but it comes with the special assembly to mount onto the carry handle. if you have the money, your best choice is the seecraq3942r. it is a lighter version, and the mount is part of the scope, instead of clamped on with rings. it is also encased in flat black rubber lining and has flip up lense caps. that one will only cost you about 130 bucks.
if you want a truly amazing scope, again, compact, get a stmaq3942g. that is an incredible scope. illuminated mildot reticle, compact, built in sunshade, and rated for .50 cal bmg. oh, and it has the integrated AR carry handle mount. Last edited by survivor-guy; 01-07-2009 at 10:54 PM.. |

have two one on one of my AR's and one on my 41 mag Ruger Black Hawk. Both hold the zerro and have never had any problems with either. Bother are 4+ years old. I was looking small compact scopes with lighted crosshairs. These were the only ones I could find. One I purchased from one of our Survivial forum members who is a dealer(when members of another fourm). The other off ebay. No complaints here.

Next question is what scopes are made in the USA?
None that I can think of. They all come from China, Japan, Europe or somewhere overseas. Yeah, even Lupold comes out of China. There is even a cheaper way to by these Chinese scopes. There is a site called dealextreme.com and you purchase direct from the factory--and they ship it to you. T |

I've heard bad things about the $30 NcStars but not many bad things about the Mark 3 series. Then again, a few times they replaced the "junk" with a $600+ scope so there isn't a comparison.
I have the NcStar 6x42 STM642G like this one on an SKS (bought it elsewhere): STM642G LINK Even though it's made for the .223, so far it handles the 7.62 x 39 recoil, and if it fails it has a lifetime warranty. |

I have a ncstar with the .223 drop compensator reticle and I judge it to be quite good in quality. The only complaint I might have is that the reticle brightness does not differ much from one setting to the next on the brightness control. Otherwise it is a good deal for the money.
