The ABSOLUTE BEST alcohol stove, GUARANTEED!!
OK, the title I gave this thread invites criticism, and I will most likely catch some flak here. Bring it on, punk.
Just joking with the punk thing. But before you are critical, please try it. It will cost you $3 for the can, that's it. WHY MY DESIGN OF HOMEMADE STOVE IS BETTER THAN ALL THE OTHERS: 1) It can be opened to store things in when not being used (important for go-light hikers like myself). 2) It can be opened for filling (no need for that center hole). 3) It's only 7/8" thick, yet holds more fuel than any pop-can stove twice it's size (enough to keep water boiling for 45 minutes by using damper after acheiving boil). It will boil 2 cups of water in 8 minutes. 4) It's more efficient than any other alcohol stove (including Jetboil, which I own). Two tablespoons of fuel (1oz.) will keep water boiling for 30 minutes. 5) The heat output is completely adjustable, even while it's burning, by using damper to block holes. 6) With the container and a nail you can make one in under a minute - and IT WILL WORK without tinkering with it. THE DOWN SIDE (yes, there is one): The metal is not aluminum and so therefore more crush resistant, BUT requires a little more priming to get the alcohol vapors coming out the holes. I dump a half-teaspoon around it to heat it up. Here it is: DSC00401.jpg DSC00402.jpg The dime is glued to a washer to cover the center using JB heat resistant glue (not neccessary to do). The can is a $3 can from Wallyworld that had BB gun pellets in it. Simply peel the stickers off the can and punch eight small holes in the top with a nail (or drill them). Start with small holes and then enlarge, mine are about the size of a toothpick. That's it, your done. Fill it up 3/4 of the way (about 3 tablespoons, or use less, of course) with methyl alcohol, screw the lid down tight, dump a little alcohol on and around it for priming, and light her up. You can use a washer or something similar to block as many holes as you wish, thereby regulating the heat. I've made many working stoves from pop cans and have not been happy with any of them for various reasons. I really like this little thing. Nice one, could you maby put a hole in the side and attatch a valve or something with a hose to a extra fuel tank, just to get more burningtime?
And what fuels can you use on this?

Good stuff, well done. I have made hundreds of the traditional pepsi can stove and I think yours is just great. One question, how do you prime it?

As to using a cheaper fuel than Methyl Alcohol (gas line anti-freeze):
It's only $1.20 for 12oz. at my Wallyworld (Heet brand). It don't get much cheaper than that. As to priming: Alcohol needs to be heated to start vaporizing, it's the vapors that burn. If you only put a tablespoon in the stove you can prime it with a lighter or something like that held under it. If you want to fill it, you will need to "cook" the whole can for a few seconds. I do this by dumping a half-teaspoon or so of alcohol on and around it so the whole thing goes up in flames. After 5-10 seconds only the holes will be jetting flame. Alcohol lights with the slightest spark, also. I use it in the woods to sprinkle on my tinder and then light it with a Sweedish Steel and striker (a dual use for the alcohol you pack). I was thinking you might be able to refuel while in use with a syringe and a slightly longer needle to put more fuel through one of the orifices, also an old metal brake fluid can with the screw lids can be use for a secure leak proof carrier for the fuel.

alright so i tryed it and it works. I used like 20 year old denatured alcohol that was in my parents garage. I used a top of a Sterno can as a primer pan and it work very well.

winters921, you made the holes HUGE. That will work but it wont be very efficient. If that's what you like, cool, but it's not the way I did it.
zenpilot, I posted a picture of the needle I use to refuel. It works very well. The Bum.
