This looks like a great idea. Does anyone have any practical experience with this filter?

It seems to be a fairly simple and mature as in has been in use for a while water filtration system. Here is information on the filter element
Berkefeld Water Filters
& info on how to build one
here
The filter can be found in various sizes. I have seen them in 7" & 9" & 10" for most applications and have been searching for the best price. Here is a good price on the 10" size one
Filter
The one I listed in the 1st post looks to be a very small filter and might be limited in how long it will last and how fast it will filter. The one listed here shows how to build one with 2-7" filters (called candles) and looks to be a better idea for our use.
