I travel extensively for my job. It is not practical to lug a BOB all across the country with me so I am working on putting together a smaller bag that I can bring with me in my checked baggage.

The most likely need would be if I had to ride out a hurricane or found myself in some other type of localized disaster and would have to travel a few days to get out of the disaster area. Worse case scenario would be a total collapse and I would find myself having to make my way back home from the other side of the country.

Other than the obvious and standards, (handgun, knife, multi tool, water purification, fire kit, etc) what would you be sure to have with you?
Would you carry a small backpack or an over the shoulder versipack?

Regular luggage should contain a change of clothes vacuum packed if possible: khaki cargo pants, 2 pocket khaki shirt w/epaulets, leather money belt, leather suspenders, underwear w/extras, leather safari jacket, wide brim hat, Danner boots. Upon arrival purchase a 3-pack of Bic lighters and several bottles of water.

To serve the needs stated in the OP I would include these items in the emergency bag (some are specifics for the obvious and standards stated):

A money belt with the same is also a good idea.

I am road tripping at the moment. Staying on the floor of a friends house.

So far I have pretty much made do with a bivvy a woobie and a mat to sleep on. I also packed an alcohol stove, some coffee and a torch. Add a decent pocket knife and a water bottle and that would be pretty much all the extra I would pack.

My truck BOB is about as small as I care to make it, a stuffed 1000ci Kifaru E&E bag with a SpecOps rat Pack on the outside. This would take up alot of room in my already packed suitcase. I'D be worried that the TSA Nazis would pilfer my BOB for its goodies. What's a guy to do?

Also, what are people packing in their carry on BOB?

Carry-on is always a problem since you can't take any blade. Leatherman makes a bladeless multitool that I carry on, but have had one confiscated anyway. So pack everything else in a non-military style bag and grab a lighter a blade and something to use as stove fuel (or tinder if fuel is plentiful) when you land. If you check any bags you can pack a blade there. Keep it in a toiletry kit to be the least noticeable. We are flying to Scotland in June and have your dilemma. I'm grappling with whether or not to buy a Maxpedition Unterduffel for the trip. Carry-on size and a variety of carry options Including pack straps. It may look too military but would be very convenient. I would use it for my vehicle GHB after.

Since the assumption here is that you'd be doing a good bit of walking, I'll suggest some comfortable,broken-in shoes or boots, some Mole-skins, a couple extra pairs of socks, and a decent rain shield (poncho or pants/jacket).
Also, a compass and maybe even a road atlas. :thumb:

Sorry OP I reread your original post and just realized that you were asking about "checked" baggage not carry-on. I would carry the following (my own minimum) only adding a firearm to the kit if it isn't a trip by aif.

Clark Jungle hammock with their XL tarp. Any model is good that has their weather shield
Snug Park jungle hammock or jungle blanket
Sport blanket-tarp. The kind that is foil on one side and has corner tucks for hands
IMPS survival net
First Need water purifier
Life Straw
40 oz Klean Kanteen in water bottle pouch nested in alpine cup
100 oz Source water reservoir in carrier
Biolite stove and kettle
Blast match
A magnesium bar as large as you can find
A couple dozen wet fire tenders
Add Bic lighters and a box of storm matches unless it's air travel. Then add them when you ground
Leatherman Wave with bit kit
TAK fixed blade knife in D2
Large machete-like blade, RTAK or Condor K&T Boomslang or Parang
CNET May folding knife
Good diamond sharpener, 2 grits
Oil soaked piece of cotton and 000 steel wool in a ziplock
6" bastard file
4 sided wood shaping rasp
Spool of 28 ga florist wire
Spool of 18 ga galvanized
Couple hundred zip ties, mostly 6"
Tube marine epoxy putty
2 tube super glue gel
Sewing kit
Small hunt and fishing kit that includes swim goggles, frog gigs and assortment of steel snares
Comprehensive first aid kit
Hygiene kit that includes 100 coin towels and 6 wag-bags, nail clippers and unbreakable mirror
12w/12w solar charger and Newtrent waterproof shockproof 14000 may portable battery
Batt Pack battery charger
AA and AAA rechargeable batteries
Sidewinder flashlight and handheld led flashlight
2 Kriana krill light sticks
Map case with write-in-rain notebook, space pen, 3 or 4 wooden pencils, waterproof maps of AO, lensatic compass, monocular
Leopold compact 10 to 20 power spotting scope
Hat, gloves, shemagh, wool watch cap, 2 bandanas, folding reading glasses and sunglasses, 3 pair underwear, 4 pair socks, 2 nylon t-shirts, 2 pair trousers, 2 long sleeved nylon shirts, rain suit, riggers belt
1 pair crocs, 1 pair boots ( winter clothes if the climate calls for it)
6 freeze dried meals resealed in vacuum bags
9 pack emergency food bars
12 electrolyte powders
Instant coffee
8 oz flask with Jack Daniels
3 months personal meds
Personal documents laminated
Complete set of keys
Cash enough for a bus ticket, 3 or 4 nights in a cheap hotel, price of a pump shotgun and couple hundred rounds of ammo, and an extra $200 for food and misc.
Small emergency fm, am, NOAA radio
Backpack to stash it all in

as I read through... I noticed only one listed cash...

I'd think that would be your easiest prep to carry when traveling... ( & if you are worried about economical collapse ) barter material ( for example I keep a plastic cased roll of silver half dollars in my GHB ) ( my GHB is planned for 3 days, so your needs may vary )

IMO, the money belt is a good idea, & I'd be carrying $500 - $1000 if flying all over... & unable to carry everything I'd need to get home

Would you carry a small backpack or an over the shoulder versipack?
Single strap messenger bags, Maxpedition Versipacks, etc. are quite uncomfortable with any decent amount of weight in them. Therefore, if you have a choice, I would highly recommend a backpack, as even a cheap backpack will be more comfortable than I high dollar single strap bag.

With that said, I use a Osprey messenger bag for my non-business essentials while travelling on business. This is only because the total weight of my work gear is more than my personal gear, so my work gear goes in my backpack.

I could bring two backpacks, but I could only wear one at a time, so I bring a backpack and a messenger bag. I can wear both the backpack and the messenger bag at the same time, and often do for short durations. I also will often wear the back pack and carry the messenger bag by it's handle, switching hands often.

If/when a situation arises that would require me to be hoofing it instead of using mechanical modes of transportation I will rearrange my gear as necessary, but still most likely keep both bags. I have a feeling a lot of my business essentials will stack up lower on my priority list than my personal essentials and get left behind at that point, but hopefully I will never find out.
