On old style (mid to late 1800's) Bowies and other larger knives there would be affixed to the knife spine a bar of brass. This brass was used to allow the opponent's blade to "dig in" to the softer metal and make it possible to give better control over the opponenet's blade while perrying a slash or thrust.

There is the myth of the fabled "One Knife..."

Nine Knives were given to the races of men. But little did they know, the dark lord had found a way to control them. He created a super knife that could bind them all...

And on a serious note... A very often misunderstood piece of trivia:

There is not, nor has there ever been (at least, I don't think there ever has been), a "Blood Groove"... the purpose of that groove in the blade is to lighten the steel to improve handling characteristics, while keeping strength. It is a Fuller, or a Cannelure.

Tricky48, you probably remember this from another post awhile ago here that you and I joked about; here it goes!

Dark Ops Shadow Knife

My Dark Ops Shadow Knife. It's black. I sleep with it, I shave with it, I spear squirrels on the run with it. It's black. It's helped me de-animate hostile threats in the war-torn streets of third-world hell-holes. And it's black. It has more teeth than all my redneck cousins. I can vicariously live the life of an indestructible warrior through it. It's black. It makes me feel better about my pathetic, mediocre life. It's impregnated with Depleted Uranium. It's made of metal from a meteor and was forged in an active volcano by an Icelandic Master Blade Smith. Oh, and it's really cool because it's black.

KNIFE SUPERSTITIONS

A common superstition is that if you give a friend a knife, they should give you a coin to "pay" for it so as to avoid cutting the friendship.

It is bad luck to stir anything with a knife. "Stir with a knife and stir up strife".

It will cause a quarrel if knives are crossed at the table.

A knife placed under the bed during childbirth will ease the pain of labor.

To guarantee a boy the husband was to stick a knife in his pregnant wife's mattress. For a girl put a skillet under the bed. Or stuck into the headboard of a cradle to protect the baby-to grave-so the dead would not be defenseless in the next world.

In Greece a black-handled knife placed under the pillow is used to keep away nightmares.

Always close any knife you open. Never close any knife someone else has opened.

Some peoples believe that a knife isnt really yours nor safe to keep and use until it has tasted your blood, that way you will not accidentally cut yourself badly.

You can sharpen razor (and knife) blades by placing them in a pyramid. (Google it).

Never open a blade and give it to someone to show. Give the blade to them and let them open it.

Native Americans made knives out of flint or obsidian which created a natural serrated edge only for the modern world to reinvent it and discover how aggressively it cuts.

always give a knife with a piece of copper, so it doesn't cut friendly ties. dates back to the celts. never scabbard a blade with out allowing it to drink. it will fail you in battle.

Doctors were using obsidian blades all through the 20th century and now they are used heavily by plastic surgeons and eye surgeons...Actually it cuts so finely hence the use by specialists.

A knife's effectiveness at cutting is a function of the object being drawn across the length of the blade. It is not necessarily a matter of how fast or hard one cuts with it or how sharp the blade is.

A knife is a tool. There are a variety of knives for a variety of activities. A knife can be used as a weapon, but is not one by design. Even military knives are "field" or "Utility" knives that serve a dual purpose... the second being last resort hand to hand fighting.

All knives are capable of roughly the same things relative to their size and weight class.

The "best" knife is the whatever knife you have spent the most time using and achieving efficient results with. Skill with knives is universal and if you can do something with one knife, you are likely going to be able to get similar results with a different knife.

Knives/Blades in poems, art & music:

Gold is for the mistress -- silver for the maid -- Copper for the craftsman cunning at his trade."
"Good!" said the Baron, sitting in his hall, "But Iron -- Cold Iron -- is master of them all."
