Default Thrive/Shelf Reliance Pancake Mix Voluntary Recall

Advertise Here

Thrive/Shelf-Reliance has issued a voluntary recall of some lots of their 6-Grain Pancake Mix in #10 cans. There is not a danger from consuming the food, but offgassing of the ingredients may cause sudden pancake mix release when the can is opened which could cause injury. Mmmm, sudden pancake release sounds like a bonus to me, but...

Quote:
Our records indicate that you have purchased THRIVE 6 Grain Pancake Mix through an order on Costco.com. This product may have been part of a year supply or other package. It has come to our attention that this product contains ingredients that react over time and increase the pressure inside the can, which may cause cans to expand or bulge and increase the risk of sudden release of the pancake mix when the can is opened and could pose the risk of injury. Because this product no longer meets our stringent quality standards we uphold, we are issuing a voluntary recall of the following product:

64 and 72 ounce cans (#10 cans) of THRIVE 6 Grain Pancake Mix produced from August 2009 through July 2012. The production date is found on the bottom of the can.

No other THRIVE products are included in this recall. This product was discontinued in July 2012 and replaced with our current 10 Grain Pancake Mix, which has shown no problems and is not affected by this recall. Click here to see the recalled product labels for ease of identification.

We have not received any complaints of illness and, based upon independent lab testing, there is no food safety issue with this product. Thus, any product that has already been consumed poses no threat to the consumer. We have no reason to believe this issue has any impact on the taste or quality of the product. The recall has been issued solely due to safety concerns associated with the opening of cans that have more pressure inside than normal.

Therefore, this voluntary recall is limited to unopened cans of this product. If you still have any unopened cans of product, we ask that you dispose of it immediately in an outside trash receptacle. Thrive Life will replace any unopened cans you must dispose of with cans of THRIVE 10 Grain Pancake Mix.
There is a FAQ at the following link which also has links to the lot numbers affected.
http://www.thrivelife.com/recall_faq

You should have a received a recall notice via email, but you might have used a throwaway email or need to check your spam filters. There are also contact numbers and email addresses if you didn't get the email.

Sudden pancake mix release? That's a hilarious reason for a recall!

I hope that the sudden pancake release turns out as delicious as it sounds.

I think this occurred because the people who put this product out are not members on this forum. Otherwise, they would have known baking powder is not stable for long term storage.
