Default Lessons From NY on Ammo Availability

Advertise Here

A few observations as we continue with the amazing lack of ammo on LINY:

1. Shotgun ammo remains plentiful and relativley inexpensive.
2. .22 long rifle and mag have remained avaialble, just in limited supplies
3. .45 auto ammo remains available. Same for .40 cal.
4. 30-06, .270. .357 mag, 38 spl and .30-30 rifles and ammo remain available. (The over 40 crowd stands with arms crossed, smug grin on face. )

What is not avail?

9mm, 5.56, 223, 308 and 7.62x39, or the stuff many throught WOULD be avail.

Most of us have what we might need for an emergency packed away long ago, so no issue, but the most common ammo we thought would be the best from an availabity standpoint has turned out to be totally unavailable. My preferance for .22 LR, .22 mag, the Henry rifle in .22 mag and the 30-30 is to me confirmed. .357 magnum is also generally avail too, making that pistol rifle combo easily sustainable. Time for a 3rd 30-30?

So hang onto that .300 WSM or that .300 Savage or .30-30. It might be the best gun if a long term unrest situation took place. Stay grey, keep your head down and watch this play out.

Not Upstate. While a lot of shotgun ammo is available, none of the other stuff is available, not even .22. For the life of me I can't figure out why i can't get .30-30. Yesterday ****'s got a shipment in and it had everything but .30-30. The shelves were cleared out by the end of the day again though.

The only ammo I have seen in Georgia has been marked up 30%. Some 30-06 and .270 but that is about it. And bird shot.

South Georgia here. I see little 5.56, .22 lr, and .22 mag but everything else seems available. Some prices are up...but ammo is available in spurts sometimes. But I reload and decided to pick up 4 more pounds of Hodgdon Universal Clays smokeless powder today. Very useful powder...akin to Unique but burns cleaner.

my area I have found shot gun ammo, but limited to bird shot and some slugs. Sabots are hard to find. Handgun ammo getting harder to find, haven't seen much fo 22 lr in this area at all which is usually plentiful.

also, black powder supplies are harder to find now too.

Only 30%?

With today's prices that's a bargain.

Locally in the Texas Panhandle and West Texas the only ammo available is odd rifle calibers such as 7mm Mag, .300 WSM, maybe a little .270 and some .17HMR. That's about it. Occassionally a box or two of pistol ammo, no .22lr, no 9mm, no .38spl/.357mag, no .45acp.

The Reason: I believe that Texans are preparing for War and Praying it doesn't come.

Here in Northern VA, shotgun ammo is available everywhere, 223/5.56 is around $1/round selection is very limited, 32-23 special-380-45-357 is avialable. 9mm is very hard to find. 22LR comes and goes, if you visit a couple of shops you can find it. I was surprised that 30 AR mags are available.

In New Mexico, only shot gun avail. ( is a little more available than a several weeks ago)
I saw 2 boxes of 9 mm on a sports goods shelf a week ago. Other than that shelves bare.
Vendors have said they get a little in now and then, but people line up when they know trucks are coming in. It's gone in half n hour.

Prepare, or whine. Remember when there was no gasoline in the U.S.? I do. Lesson on ammo availability: Like any item, supplies are limited, even food, if there is a run on ANYTHING it becomes scarce. This has happened repeatedly with ammo, 2008, 2012, being recent events. If you don't have it at home, you don't have it, that's it...

Well i got 8k of 9mm; 40 and 45 boolits in this last week plus a bunch of powder. Good for awhile on primers; hope to get my primer order from early January filled by summer. Prices on all of the components were comparable to pre panic prices. It pays to be patient and be a reloader along with always maintaining an inventory of supplies.

Also got 1k of 6.8 boolits in last week for my 6.8 SPC; waiting on a restock of 223 projectiles, maybe another month or so (I am fine with my existing supplies). Plenty of supplies for other calibers.
