Default Looking into a .308 AR rifle, what brands are best?

Advertise Here

I am looking into the .308 brands of AR rifles. Right now their primary use will be for hog hunting and deer hunting in Florida as well as a trip out west to go get an elk eventually. If shtf I would use this wepon as a primary as well and it will be opted with duel sets of sights. An optic scope as well as a red dot non optic for close range. I have been looking into the REPER as well as a few other brands but I would like the experts ideas on this. I know weapons, however, the AR's are new to me but I like the flawless design and relibality of them while also being able to put out ALOT of rounds if necessary. Any imput will be greatly appricated especially on what brands to look into.

The M1A I have looked into, however, I would like to have more rounds and the chance to shoot much faster than what it can do. For your imput thank you. You may be able to deter me though... Why do you prefer the M1A?

I have 25 round Mags for my Socom II. I have had no issues with weight either.

You basically come down to 2 different styles. The Armalite or the DPMS style (there are many manufactures within these 2 styles) each have great rifles. The final deciding factor for me came to the fact that the DPMS style can take a Magpul Magazine. Half the cost of the Armalite magazines and I really like their performance.

I went DPMS for that reason. I got an AP4. I have a Millet 1-4 scope on it and absolutely love it. Only got it sighted in at 50 yards at the moment but shoots a group with holes touching. Can't wait to get it dialed in at 100 yards and start playing at distance.

Honestly, I like the M1A better for very simple reasons:

- Long range accuracy
- Short range it is still very deadly
- I can fire and reacquire the target quicker than with the AR platform (personal choice - I like the weight)
- When I run out of rounds I am not reduced to poking at the enemy in hopes of defeating them. I can clobber them mightily as I sing the Marine Corps Hymn at the top of my lungs.
- All the AR shooters come over into my lane and ask "What on earth is THAT?" and when they figure it out they walk dejectedly back to their own shooting lanes and are miserable until they can find a buyer for their sub-standard weapon and they can earn enough to procure a real firearm.

The Armalite or the DPMS
The question was "best".
When most folks post that question, I don't think they are prepared for the answer ($).

Bottom line, anything with a name you've heard before makes a rifle that will generally fire a round when you pull the trigger. There are several affordable .308's that you will likely be very happy with (until you have to buy ammo).

Best? Do you really mean "best"? Got $ Thousands to spend on one?

In no particular order although I'm somewhat biased ;

Standard production semi auto, AR style platforms. (The LWRC is piston operated, the rest are gas).

Lewis Machine & Tool MWS (http://www.lmtstore.com/complete-wea...ck-barrel.html)

Rock solid, HIGH quality, bullet proof, sub MOA accuracy.

LaRue Predator http://www.laruetactical.com/larue-t...ifle-18-barrel

I've handled one, but never ran one. It's a very nicely made rifle with many followers.

LWRC Repr ( I own a LWRC M6 (5.56), but have no personal experience of their .308 . The M6 is very, very good if that equates )

FN SCAR.
I never wanted to like the SCAR in 5.56 or .308 . I should have never shot them. I've got a lot of lust for the .308. Both shoot SO SOFT and recoil straight back, very little muzzle flip. The .308 is incredibly light and actually fun to shoot. IF I ever sell the LMT, it would be to buy a SCAR. I'm waiting for them to change upgrade a few items, then it might be really tempting. As it is, the LMT always makes me smile.

Knights Armanant SR-25 http://www.knightarmco.com/sr25.html

LMT MWSE http://www.lmtstore.com/308-modular-weapon-system.html

Larue OBR http://www.laruetactical.com/obr-762
Larue PredatOBR http://www.laruetactical.com/predatobr-762
Larue PredatAR http://www.laruetactical.com/predatar762

These manufactures have a consistent and stringent quality control program and build a overall high quality product. These are not budget minded and not advertised as such. I belive both Knights and LMT have or have had goverment contracts for thier .308 rifles. (perhaps not these particular models, but built to stringent standards non of the less)

If you are intrested in a DPMS 308 I would reccomend a quick google search for problems and inconsistencies.

edit: Foxtrot beat me too a few of these as I was typing out my post, no repetitiveness intended.

i own an armalite AR10 carbine, it's a cadillac, outstanding value for the money, the more i shoot it the more i appreciate it. i consider the AR10 as the minimal start for a high quality .308 caliber AR type rifle.

Stay tuned, Noveske is getting back into the .308 world. If they make it, it gets my vote. With nearly any product. I have nitpicked their stuff apart, even to the number of coils and buffer material on their extractor springs, and find that they are "the best" and don't go with fads, in ever case I have seen/nit-picked.

Oh dang. If it's typical Noveske, I could possibly end up broke, divorced or both. Let's be real, I'll make due with looking at the pictures.

Pppfffft! just put some away each paycheck until it comes out and you will be fine!

You're right though, Noveske is addictive! I bought my first one about a year ago, and already have a factory SBR in jail, and a spare upper for it on the way in another SBR length. If you don't own anything from them, maybe you shouldn't start, lol

Get an AR upper in 6.5 Grendel.... many significant advantages over an 308 AR or any other semi-auto 308.

I am purchasing a dpms that is just standard and nothing fancy that I plan to upgrade over time as I have to money to. I want to eventually add a bipod, optic, buis, tac rails and possibly even swap out the upper. If you can afford it go with a LaRue.

Is there surplus 6.5 Grendel for sale by the case?

Is 6.5 Grendel readily available in bulk?

My local toy store has cases of .308/7.62x51 for around $0.73 per round.

They don't have ANY 6.5 Grendel.

I'm not knocking the Grendel round, I'm simply stating availabilty.
