Default diy camper idea on the cheap.

Advertise Here

What do you guys think of my diy camper idea. I'am restoring a 1973 VW super beetle that runs and drives but was ugly. body work 90% done and primered except the 4 fenders. Price I traded a used refrig I was not in use to a man who needed a fridge. The fridge was a free working unit so cost of the car was nothing. Last week I found a 1974 VW super beetle body for sale guy asking $100. He took my offer of $50.00, made the ole lady really mad but that is another story. The 2nd bug has no floors, suspension, motor, trans. But what it does have is the floorless body all the glass, doors, interior, fenders, lights, and many small items i need for the driver one. Here is the idea. When done robbing 2nd one of donor parts, It would be still complete enough to make a 2 person camper. I could have a friend weld up a square tube frame trailer, add simple trailer axle from trailer supply out fit local to me, and finish off the inside with plywood, a simple covering from fabric supply house to make weekend fishing camper out of VW bug. All I would need to start with is deep cycle battery to run car stero and pair of speekers, get new poly gas tank for water supply. What do you think

not yet my old digital camera got pitched in the trash a few months ago, looking for cheap camera at walmart this weekend to replace it. If I get the camera I will post pics of the driver one progress, and the donor one I was thinking of turning into a redneck camper.Being short on the money things in life, I hate to see items goto waste if you can reuse them.

i'm not sure a vw body would be wide enough to sleep 2 people... comfortably.
although, if the wife is still mad at you, it might just be you and the dog so it should be good.

Instead of building a hard sided camper out of it, why not use the frame to make a sleeping platform intended for setting a tent on? Could a VW even pull a trailer at 55-65 mph on the highway safely?

There is more room in a Beetle than you think, I had a 74 and was surprised at how much leg room there is. Not so much in width but it would be fine for someone you where willing to snuggle with. Don't think I would bunk with a buddy!

I think there is enough room to have a bed and keep the back seat, which would be nice to have a place to sit.

Ehhh if i was you id get everything you needed off of it. Remove the body and scrap it. Sell the frame for an manx type conversion for 50 bucks. You ll end up ahead and maybe your ole lady wont be mad.

I am 6'8" and restored and customized VW's as a teenager. Let me just assure you two people of the opposite sex can do many things in the back . . . even sleep!

Are you making it 4 wheeled and just replacing the back axles with the trailer axle right? and leaving the front to even the weight? Then that would make a great little teardrop camper. strip the frame and tube the new body. Sounds great to me.
Awsome recycling!!

Now that would be a funny sight, a beetle towing a "beetle teardrop", that is a super cool idea. I would chop the hood section off of the teardrop donor and go from there.

Looks like someone already had this idea but I would leave more of the front end.

Not sure about a teardrop BC it's so heavy. That would be the coolest BBQ grill ever.
