if cops want your car stopped, they can turn your car off

it has tracking in it

it can tell you what is wrong with your car, i BELIEVE it can read your check engine light

OnStar monitors the air bags, and if they deploy (indicating a wreck) it notifies an operator who will verbally check on you. I like this as we live in a rural area with narrow two lane roads and on certain nights of the week the chances are 50/50 the oncoming driver is drunk.
If the cops can get your OnStar equipped vehicle turned off, why are there so many high speed chases on the nightly news?
Yes, my truck's systems are monitored, even the air pressure in my tires, and once a month a report is sent to my e-mail.
Hey, if you don't want this stuff, buy another brand. Life is full of choices, show some initiative.
Do you have one o' them fancy I-phones (or whatever they're called)? You are already being tracked. And the cops CAN ping you.

Don't remove it. Just have a friendly local mechanic short the thing out. Make sure it remains in place but just does not work. Then if something happens, "Oh! Darn! You mean that black box recorder was broke? Well, at least I didn't remove it."

It's already passed the Senate. There can be no doubt, freedom is on life support. When will they pull the plug?

One has to wonder how this "Black Box" will react to the neodymium magnet I put on the side of it?

It probably won't bother it at all. I hang rare earth magnets off the side of my computer with no ill effects.

Most of us already have "black boxes" in our cars ever heard of progresive snapshot
http://www.progressive.com/auto/snap...-it-works.aspx

- All that is , Is a device that externally records the info

On star and others whether you pay for it or not it's in your car and recording info. - that they sell to different agencys
I own a 05 pick-up To disable it I had to pay a guy to remove the antenna - I am told on some of the newer cars It's a bitch to remove - and if you do your likely to lose some electronic functions and will not be able to get the vechile inspected in NY atleast

snapshot is a data logger that reads the odb2 data so it knows the speed your traveling at the distance you travel and the like info. onstar requires a court order to track the info unlike cell data they pull off the tower records which require no court order just an official request.

disabling the black box will also cause the car to not run as its part of the brain good luck on disabling it. lol.

Just pack a big magnet next to the box, see what happens.

lol. with improper shelding there just might be issues with magnets. but considering this is your cars computer i doubt you would like that. as to the trip computer i dont know what to tell you but the thing gets its info from the computer from the odb2 signals being sent out to it. so your saying your leaving a magnet on the cpu under the dash?

What's a magnet going to do to a computer? Most computers already have strong rare earth magnets inside them.

As I understand it a court order is only needed if/when they break anonymity

for onstar to force activate and track the vehicle it requires a judges order just as gps for cellphones. tower informtion for cell providers only require a supena even if not signed by a judge. just this past week there was an article written about this tower info and 3 cities have complied with the foia requests. btw its not that easy to request onstar info as it takes more then license tag info

All modern cars made have this. Some records 10 seconds of data and is over written while others record up to a minute or two. The data is used for diagnostics and crash reconstruction not tracking.
