Default How many pounds of flour fit in a five gallon bucket?

It's a real question...lol...not an April Fool's prank.

I've got some flour in ten pound bags, want to open 'em up, put the flour in a mylar bag in a five gallon pail, O2 absorber, etc., etc.

Just wondering about how many pounds of flour I can expect to get into that size container.

Thanks in advance, I appreciate the information.

About 32-33 pounds or so. Depends on how compacted the flour is.

Flour looses all of it's good things in 5 to 7 days after grinding. Commercial flours have all of the good things removed. Consider storing whole wheat berries a grinder.

To make "more fit" compact it yourself. Pour the flour until it's full, then take a long straight knife and "cut" through the flour, you will see it compact down and you will be able to add more to the top.

I have a couple hundred pounds of wheat berries and a hand grinder. I also want some flour ready to go. Hence the question, how many pounds fit in a five gallon pail...

Thanks, sounds like what I experience with coffee beans as I fill my jars; if I "vibrate" the jar once it appears full the contents settle and I can get a bit more in. Appreciate the tip.

Thanks, I'll use 30 as a rough estimate and have an extra bag to "top off" the buckets after the basic amount is in place. I appreciate your sharing your experience.

Sorry if it's been said already but I'd accept losing a little space in the bucket and bag up the flour in smaller portions. I think that less opened at once is better for the long haul. How much will you go through at any given time, anyway. I'd use 1 gallon or smaller bags. Also, that's going to give you more bags to reseal and reuse later on.

I store my GP flour in 5-pound bags stacked in a bucket, three on the bottom, two on top. They're in mylar, along w/ a couple of big O2 absorbers.

I only get 25# in a bucket this way, but I like the ease of storage.

25 lbs is what I get, too. You could probably get 26lbs in there, but it's easier to just use 25 since it generally comes in 5lb bags.

Can you elaborate on the wheat berries? How many pounds of flour does 100 pounds of berries grind down to? Do you hand or electric grind currently? Do you have a vendor that you like for the berries?

I agree to seal everything up in small bags and grind latter right before use. I would ask myself how much at a time you plan to use before it would go bad, and base my bag sizes on less than that, obviously a family of 6 would have bigger bags than a couple with no kids. This is one problem I have noticed across the industry with the freeze dried food that lasts up to 35 years, it is all in industrial size cans. Imagine one or two people going to make a meal with those, you open about 5 different things and you would have to eat the same meal several times till it's gone. Maybe I am missing something, but why does nobody sell these in individual size portions? I guess I am getting slightly off topic here.

Which weighs more, a pound of feathers or a pound of lead?

100 pounds is 100 pounds.

Believe it or not, you can get wheat berries at WalMart in the flour aisle. I find it typically on the bottom shelf under the flour; it's sold in brown bags of 25# each. Last time I looked it was about $14/bag.

In the local WM, they only carry about 2 or 3 bags each of hard red or hard white wheat, so you cannot buy in bulk off the shelf. They probably won't have any in back (just in time stocking of shelves), but if you talk to the manager, they can order you as much as you want.

I've got about all I need stored up, but when I bought it I'd try to buy it in 100# increments, as I can get 100# in three 5-gallon buckets (mylar and O2 absorbers of course).

Sadly, not all do I have yet to see a Wal-mart that carries them, and I've been to many. They do have it listed on their website, but they don't have any options for ship to store. You guys that have it in your stores, count yourselves lucky!
