The big thing about dealing with USDA is they want you to jump thru all of their silly hoops, not my kind of thing

Due to the intensive effort and resources required to ensure availability of germplasm for this purpose, we are unable to distribute it for home gardening or other purposes that can utilize readily available commercial cultivars.

Seeds from the Govm'nt, hummmmm. So now I'm even MORE dependent on them? No thanks, I'll pass.

I'd just as soon they hadn't any idea what I'm planting and how much.

I notice it says they cannot provide seeds to anyone who has access to readily available commercial cultivars.

For every crop, the USDA stores seeds of every variety for that species and for every other related species, even varieties and/or species which are not used agriculturally. The primary purpose of this is the preservation of genetic diversity for use by plant breeders. They can obtain seeds from any of these related varieties or species as starting genetic material for a new commercial variety. The USDA will not give you free seeds unless you can prove you are a legitimate plant breeder or other type of scientific researcher.

Look at post numbers 2, 3, & 9

Your also paying for secret military research, space exploration, and welfare idiots, but I'm sure you can't ask the government for those as well...

They cannot be GMO seeds, as GMO seeds are patented by the developer, and the patent holder requires a signed contract in order to purchase the seeds.

There are actually very few GMO seeds in the country, and even fewer available to home gardeners.

"Since many important crop species originate outside the United States, the first steps toward diversity are acquisition and introduction. New germplasm (accessions) enter NPGS through collection, donation by foreign cooperators or international germplasm collections."

Several years, ok maybe a few decades ago, but who is counting: the USDA I think came around and told us how great Multiflora Rose was and that it was the way to go to naturally fence our fields... We decided not to... However Multiflora rose has taken over and I have no idea how millions of dollars the gov and farmers have pd to try and control it.
so lets bring in more exotic (to this country) plants insects ect and see if they can get out of control, Kudzu, boas in everglades (I know not gov fault but shows the problem); and lots of others...
NO THANKS
