I understand where you're coming from. But would you feel the same way if it was nonstop, day in and day out?

I've been online since before there was a WWW to make websites on. And one thing I've seen over the years is that sooner or later, the folks with the answers get tired of typing it out 10 times a day, day in and day out. So a lot of threads simply don't achieve their potential. Or worse yet, get filled up with junk advice from others who don't have the knowledge and without correction from those that do. I've been seeing a lot more of that here recently.

Simple netiquette is to try to find the answer first. This helps prevent the problem I mentioned above. It benefits everyone. You can't teach this many people, one person at a time. They have got to take some responsibility for trying to find some of their own answers.

I know that personally, it gets really frustrating when I just finish typing the last word of some long explanation, only to have someone turn right around and ask the same damned question again. But that's just me. We're all wired differently.

In most cases, it's just plain lazy newbies with an appetite for instant gratification.
I've offered this suggestion before. - Is there any way to lock newbies into a subforum before they graduate to posting on the main board? Allow them to read only, utilize the search functions, access the files etc in the main section, but bar them from posting to it until they have posted 30 or so posts in the newbie section. That would probably cut down on a lot of the repeat threads.

My husband and I can't thank all of you enough for the outstanding information that we were able to acquire from this thread. We put up our first 50 1 gallon mylars last night and it went beautifully thanks to all the great data in here. There is alot of foolishness out on the net and you experts cleared up so many questions I could just kiss your whole faces. Thanks so much for the extreme hard work and time put into this.

MikeK I agree with you, BUT this forum search function is NOT user friendly at all. I really struggled with it at first at still do at times, and I always always forget about how to use google and search this forum.

On the yahoo groups I moderate, we have a text attachment we send out to new people explaining how to search, what types of things they can post, etc. Maybe that would help here? I did not find this forum user friendly at first (but normally when I join something, I lurk until I figure things out)

The search feature takes a little practice, but it's fairly accurate. I can almost always find what I'm looking for. But most people just dump a single word into simple search, then get disheartened with it doesn't work. Using advanced search, you can find most anything. But google does work much better.

I like the idea of having an explanation of the search and instructions. I don't know how we'd get newcomers to read it. Most of them can't be bothered to read the rules even. Then when they get in trouble, they whine "but I didn't know." *sigh*

That's why I call for a quarantine area for newbies. Has this concept ever been run by Kev?

I'm not sure if it has or not.

I agree completely with Mike. Using the Advanced Search feature is almost always successful for me, and when it isn't it's usually because the keywords I've used weren't what I should have been using.

My sense is that many are simply lazy and don't want to put the effort into searching and reading; it's 'easier' to throw out their question and expect others to spoon-feed them. That gets very tedious before long.

My goodness look what my friend the Search function can turn up! I was wondering how to store unused O2 absorber packets since I've got a large pack of them and only so much food at any given time to process, and I found the information I was looking for. I'm sure the forum moderators will be happy to have one less useless thread asking for information that's already here. Thanks folks!

Mike uses the search function, found out about Mylar, fell in as he was learning

and is now good for 20 years; 30+ if kept at a cool temperature.

20 years worth of my methane would be enough to level a city block!

I'm very new to storing food, I was wondering if my method is effective. I first vacuum sealed the items (veggies, milk, dried fruits, etc) in portions using a food saver, then I put them inside a mylar bag with an oxygen absorber and vacuum/seal the mylar bag afterwards. I'm okay with overkill, in fact I like and prefer overkill but just want to make sure I'm doing it right. In advance thanks for the advice.

That's not overkill, that's underkill. The food is being stored in a vacuum and the O2 absorber is being kept away from the air left by the vacuum sealer. Vacuum sealing doesn't remove nearly as much O2 as an O2 absorber. So it's not a good long term storage solution.

As I type endlessly here: It's always best to pack foods EXACTLY like the professional long term storage companies are doing it. They have decades of experience and lab testing to prove that their method works. I've seen too many ideas that "seem like they should work" but don't. It's very easy to make mistakes with food storage, or overlook critical things.

They simply put the food in either cans or mylar and add O2 absorbers. That's because that is the optimal method and nothing else is needed.

Desperation bump. Though it still won't stop the "how do I store food" threads.
