I use google, but there has to be a better engine out there that isn't "monitored" by the nanny state. Anyone have one that they recommend?

Hands down, Scroogle!

http://scroogle.org/cgi-bin/scraper.htm

It scrapes all traces of Google "evil" from searches and it uses the Google search engine.

Bing and Yahoo both are the best search engines after Google.

Startpage (startpage.com) is a pretty good alternative. They're a Dutch company, so none of their servers are in the U.S., and they don't store any information about you. Startpage actually uses Google to perform the search, without Google having access to your identity. You can also connect, anonymously, through their IXQUICK proxy.

I'm not doing anything that I think the three-letter agencies would be interested in, but it's the principle of the thing for me. No, I'm not paranoid, but do think that there is just too little privacy left in this digital world.

Umm, both are just as bad WRT tracking, privacy, etc and neither can find anything. Those are two of the worst search engines.
