Default Berkey water filter FAILURE - FYI

For those of you who have Berkey water filters. Be aware that there are problems with some of the filters that will cause them to fail.

I have a Big Berkey and Berkey Light.
The Big Berkey is newest and was purchased around 12/2010

Recently, after performing the recommended light scrub on the Big Berkey filters, I noticed that the filters were running fast.
The bottom portion would fill up within 15 minutes.
Questioning this, I performed the food coloring test and both filters elements failed.
I put them up to a faucet to backflush them and found both elements were leaking from where the carbon is glued to the plastic flange.

I alerted the company that sold me the unit and they confirmed that there was a batch of filters that were produced with bad adhesive.
The company promptly replaced my filters and the unit has been fine.

FYI - Just keep an eye on your filtering speed and perform the food coloring test periodically.

Still a great product and highly recommended.

ADDED:
I think the reason why they failed suddenly is because when I turned the unit on it's side to remove the filters to scrub them, the weight of the filters stressed the glue at the flange. Just something to be aware of.

Good eye, Never trust mechanical/man made items with your life. Always perform periodic test on them.

I have two black filters in my storage area (laying on their sides) - should I have them upright? Where's the Berkley Guy?

I did that while they were mounted, so they were basically hanging from the plastic spout/flange assembly.
I don't think that maneuver is even a problem with the proper glue. The combination of that move and bad glue caused them to come loose.

I don't think I can trust them. I think my replacements are now failing.

I'm gonna start looking for a better filter now. Any advice?

We've had a long running thread about this very issue. I figured the problem would have been solved by now, but unfortunately, we had some recent posts in that thread indicating that the problem is still occurring with new filters.

I hope they get it solved pretty quick. I've been in the market for new filters for a few months now, but I'm hesitant to buy any until I know for sure that I'm not going to get defective ones.

Are there any problems with the white ceramic filters? Or is it just the black?
