I like the Cold Steel Recon 1, it just looks heftier to me.

My personal tactical EDC is a CRKT M16-14SFG tanto point.

I honestly don't like either company. If you are on a budget look at the Spyderco Line up, they offer great knives at a very reasonable price point. Also look at Kershaw Knives.

There are others, but those fall into the lower price points since you are on a budget.

I only have handled the SOG Aegis, and I returned it to the factory to fulfill the warranty due to about .100" of blade play up and down. The lockup was complete **** and had side-to-side play as well that was only removable by tightening the pivot screw until it no longer would auto open. The handle also cracked at the pocket clip because there is no reinforcement and the clip is so tight to the handle that you have to flex them slightly to get it into your pockets if you wear jeans. STAY AWAY FROM THIS KNIFE. I returned it a month ago to repair on my own dime and have not gotten it back yet or recieved any communication back.

I have had two Cold Steel knives returned to the factory due to abnormal wear between the tangs and the slipjoints causing the lockup to weaken. One of the times they returned the original knife to me without repairing it, and I had to follow up with them a second time to obtain a replacement (that they mailed to me with no charge).

Cold Steel is a better manufacturer and offers better customer support from my experience and I would buy the Recon.

I carry a SOG flash II Sharp, good steel It was free, so I carry it so if I loose it, no loss. Would I buy one? No. Would I trust it for duty carry? No. The lock/blade is not very strong, I could see it break one swipe throuh a neck or caught in ribs, would break.

On duty I carry Cold Steel Ti-lite (awesome knife! Faster than a switchblade on the draw) Its a sticker, though I cut my dinner with it- works ok. Sharpens easy. Or a Voyager XL Its fast too- flick! its out. Sharp as heck. Its in case I need to hack off an elk head or something But in a knife fight, its a slasher. Deadly.

Default my EDC

my EDC, off work, is a Columbia River Knife & Tool Carson Design 3 1/2" M16-12Z with the American Tanto tip. this knife is very affordable, so if its lost/destroyed, it wont break your bank/heart. ive carried mine for probably 5 years and everything is cool.

only thing is, every so often i take it apart and clean inside the circle cut-outs on the scales. i do that about once a year.

I have its big brother , a 4 inch blade that i would carry in a SHTF event, cause i wont be worrying about LE and blade length.

The picture makes it look like a piece of crap but it's as solid as a rock and has a solid locking mechanism (although it is only a liner lock). Pictures don't always tell a thousand words but I own one of these and I can assure you that it's a well made knife. I will say that I'm not a huge fan of tanto blades.

Default Recon 1

I have the old Benchmade wannabe lock version, and it is solid, tough, dependable. My friend has one as well, and he abused his. He is a glazer... commercial window placement and repair, and the tanto point is what he liked aout it. Anyway, he has dropped, pried laterrally and vertically, scraped, chiseled... etc. with it, and no problems. I have the first gen AK-47 as well and it has the same basic materials and lock. That is my go-to for heavy use and it is tough as hell. The new recons have the triad-lock, which is a lock back. I also have three knives by CS that have that lock. They are upper end so I haven't used them as much, but feel hella solid with NO blade play whatsoever. My only experience with SOG has been negative. Have not tried the Aegis, however...

I carry the Recon 1 Tanto, and it's treated me very well for the past two years as my EDC knife. It cuts great, sharpens easy, and its rock solid: very good finger grooves for prevention of your hand sliding up on the blade. It just fits perfect in your hand. With the triad lock design, the type of steel, and the overall design, I'd comfortably carry this knife into any situation that one could think of, including combat if need be.

I carry the Emerson Commando. Absolutely the best folder i've ever owned. Tough, VERY strong lock, no play in the blade whatsoever. All of emersons stuff is quality gear, i jsut liked the commando because of the deeper belly on the blade ahead of the serrations. Its made of 154CM and has quite good edge retention. Lastly, it has a very functional "wave" feature on the top of the blade that enables you to deploy the blade while you are bringing it to bear, rather than doing one after the other. I reccomend it to anyone.

I like the Spyderco Pacific Salt. As a bonus, it's totally rust resistant.

I owned the SOG Aegis for 20 minutes. Right back in the box and returned. I could live with the lessor steel, just wanted a LIGHT folder at the time. As mentioned, blade play, poor lock-up. Cool looking, nice size, not for me. I've lost hope for most of the SOG line. Seal Pup is decent, flash is decent, neither IMHO is great.

Of those two mentioned, the Recon 1 is a better knife, despite Lynn's Ninj-A-Matic marketing style.

I've recently made a decision about knives ... if it's not made in the USA, I'm not buying it. One exception is Japanese made in the right factories (Seki City, etc), they've been experts forever, they aren't building them to flood our market with crap.
