Savage -vs- Remington .308 Bolt-Actions

Both excellent guns just a matter of personal preference.

Savage 10FCP HS Precision, my current pride and joy. Might not have the accu-stock but sure does shoot like it does. The accu-trigger has to be one of the best additions to this rifle, it is an amazing thing. The photo is a stock photo from Savage, mine has a Harris bipod, 10x scope and once Midway is stocking them again a CDI floor plate so I can use the Accuracy International 10 round mags.

So +1 on the Savage for me!

Do you or anyone else know if the accu-trigger is able to be installed later on? I found a Savage that suits my needs better than the heavy contour barrel from my first post, but doesn't have the A-T:

I could use the generic scope for this hunting season (i have a back-up) and replace it later on as well.. $450 is a sweet deal

Just a quick search, nothing definitive. It might be one of those "it depends how much you want to spend" kinda mods.

I've been eye'n the wood laminate on stockys website. Thinking about the stock and then inletting it for the detachable box mag like my model 10.

Here in pa its illlegal to have a loaded rifle in the car, so the mag makes life so easy.

funny thing is I want to keep it as a blind mag I like keeping my hunting guns simple. For me if something can go wrong with a gun while hunting it will. I've even had a double barrel freeze up on me when I went to shoot a deer.

I'm thinking if I like this one I'm gonna pickup along action version in 30'06(originally went to get a 30'06 but ended up with a 308) put it in a wood stock, get iron sites put on and if possible see if I can get a Mauser claw extractor put on the bolt or find a bolt with it already on that will fit. Make it a real classic hunting rifle.

I'm seriously considering a wood stock for my model 10. I want something with a little more heft, because with that lightweight composite stock, the rifle just kicks like a mule. I am somewhat recoil-sensitive, after numerous cuts and bruises over my right eye from different rifles.

I found a couple of good write-ups on the rifles i'm looking at on SC:

They're both sub .75 MOA outta the box, the Savage arguably sub .50 MOA. The one thing that turns me off about the Remington is the 1:12 rifling twist. I prefer 180gr weight bullets for deer hunting, but 165 grain bullets will work just fine. The weight that the heavy contour barrel adds isn't very fun to hump through the woods.

Try a limb-saver recoil pad. Those things work wonders, I have a few on my rifles and shotguns. Check there web-sight, they have many differant ones for all differant rifles.

I have a Stevens 200 in 223(w/ Accutrigger) that i bought as a beater truck gun for $250 used. It is by far the most accurate gun I own and I love the trigger pull.

And I m not one of those reloader guys..i shoot cheapies

I grew up with and own Remingtons so I am biased towards them but the new Savages seem like great guns for a good price. I may get one soon, especially since they came out with one in .338 Lapua.

My Mod. 10 FCP-K. in .308. One of the interesting features is the muzzle break. It makes a .308 feel like a .223.
Target shown is 200 yards. Shooting Fed. 175.gr Sierra MK HPBT. Aside from the shot I pulled, the other 4 measure 7/8's of an inch.

Not bad grouping for Fed rounds. Good info on the muzzle break too (my range buddy has been considering a compensator on his Savage 10FPS .308).
