The thread is labelled "What is your favorite pistol caliber?" to which I'd say .45 ACP.
However, the poll says "Caliber of choice" to which I say 9mm. Two very different discussions. |

gotta go with the 9mm

The 5.7x28 fired from the FNH "Five-Seven" pistol is THE survival caliber - IF one can afford to stock up to feed it!
Magazine capacity 20 round, with 30 rounds available with little extension. With "real" ammo, the round can punch through body armor and go on the "tumble" inside flesh. The FACT that many internation, national, State, and Municipal's have adopted it speaks volumes for what it can do. No...it cannot replace the massive handgun calibers intended for protection against bear and mountain lion, but I'm sure most people already know that HUMANS will be the biggest threat and this is precisely what the 5.7 was developed to deal with. Having said all that, the REAL "ideal" survival caliber is the .22LR...of course. |

I carry this with me everywhere. Low maintenance and high yield. The price is right too.

.45 ACP in the 1911 of course. I have several pistols but the ones I shoot the most are the 1911's.

I'd like to say 45acp but here in Aussie 9mm is available everywhere!

I love the .45 ACP but I would have to go with the 9mm for an overall round. It has enough stopping power, higher capacity magazines (usually), is far cheaper for both the rounds and the pistol, and easy to come by.

My new Glock 27 40cal is a sweety, perfect carry and range gun all in one. I fought the glock urge for as long as I could, but alas, my once prized 9mm Sig P239 is now a dust collector.

I voted Other for the .460 rowland my favorite toy, 44 mag in a 1911, well close, 1350 fps 957 foot pounds of energy, 255 gr. 8 shots per mag 1 in the chamber out of a well tuned springfield 2 grand well spent.
when it's down to you and your pistol because you don't have your rifle/shotgun your gonna want more. 41 mag 10mm 44 mag 460 rowland. 10mm or a hot 45 is minimum i would ever carry in the woods. .357 mag 40 s&w or better for self defense vs 2 leged creatures because 9mm doesn't have what it takes. check out the the facts it may scare you. when you have a doped up big guy trying to have his way with you and then your family don't settle for less. Note: if you can't handle anything over a 9mm don't use it. it's always best to be comfortable with a lighter round you can handle than a heaver one you can't. |

I have no real reason, but due to practicality, price and availability, I've always been partial to 9mm.
