Default Mosin Nagant Scope set-up

Advertise Here

I am purchasing a Mosin Nagant and I am wondering what the best scope/set-up to put on it. After watching a bunch of videos on youtube I see there are several routes to take. I don't want to spend $700-$800 on a PE scope, I am not that interested in keeping it authentic. However I would like to scope it with a decent mount and optic.

I was wondering if anyone on here has experience with a sniper conversion on this rifle and what the best non ridiculous expensive rout to take is. I saw a scout set-up on youtube that looked pretty good.

I went back a few pages and did not see any threads in relation to scoping a mosin, if there has been discussion on this please point me in the right direction.

Thanks,
Dogduder

It appears some of these links are down, sorry.

check out mosinpros.com they have complete packages pretty reasonably priced. includes scope, mount, stock and some other stuff. it depends on which package you choose. i do not know how high the quality is on the optics, though.

Dogfencedude-

A couple of months ago I bought a Mosin Nagant 91/30 on sale at Cabela's for $89.00. Since then I have purchased a reproduction PU scope mount & a "Bent-Bolt" from Accumounts (http://www.accumounts.com/), as well as a flash suppressor. The suppressor was more for looks, but is supposed to help w/ recoil a bit. The scope mount is a reproduction of the original PU setup, but they have one model modified to take 1' scopes. This is the one I got and it greatly increases your scope options. Funny, I paid 3 times more for these mods then I did the rifle! Didn't include the variable power scope (bought an inexpensive one off E-Bay), shoulder pad and the $130.00 to the gunsmith to mount the mount. It was worth it though, he did a great job, better than I ever could have done. I am hoping to hunt with this rifle this year. I know the money invested seems like overkill given the age of this rifle. In the back of my mind, I am looking forward to getting a buck this year and seeing the look on my friends faces when thye find out I ytook it w/ my "old rifle"! Word of caution, I have read numerous reports of problems w/ the "Bent Bolt kits" that you see on E-Bay. Tehy dont seem to last very long before they actually end up having to be welded. I paid $89.00 for my bent bolt from Accumounts, and it is a nice piece of workmanship. Let us know how your rifle turns out.

I know they make a mount that replaces the rear site and uses a long eye relief scope. My buddy has one and it works well for him. Don't remember wher he got it but it was on line.

Does anyone know if the 2nd generation scout mounts that go on the rear sight mount hold a zero?

Iron sights work well if you have good eyes, unfortunately I don't. Some iron sight system on some of my rifle work well other don't,my Mosin just happens to be one of them.

I currently have my Mosin taken apart I'm refinishing the stock, floating the barrel channel and bedding the stock as well as polishing the bolt handle and bolt lugs as well as repainting some of the small metal parts the finish has worn off of.

I planning on installing the S & K scout mount with the 1" rings and using a 4X pistol scope. An 8" plate to the naked eye at 100 yds. still looks like an 8" plate at 400 yds, through a 4X scope and thats an extreme range for my part of the woods so the 4X should be fine. My brother has one on his Ex-Sniper 91/30 and with our hand loads it dead nut accurate.

Classic Arms has the M91/30 Sniper rifle for around $399 if you just want to buy one already set up. http://www.classicarms.us/firearms.htm

I've done both the S&K and the PE mount. I mounted a 1x Bushnell Red Dot on the S&K and a 6-24x Barska on the PE. Out to 100 Meters performance is about the same.

S&K Mount

PE Mount

ATI kit that you tap and thread the receiver works great.

We shoot mine at 200yds hitting a 4" steel target, it's never come loose.

Now the bolt handle is a joke that comes in the kit. I disassembled the bolt and mig'd a shortened and bent ak piston on.

Fr $400 you can get a modern Stevens with a scope already mounted.
If I was going to scope a mosin I would drill and tap the reciever and get a bolt conversion.

Got my M44 all finished up including a few internal accuracy improvement on the gun awhile back, got the S & K mount installed and added the 3 x 7 x 32 long eye relief scope. For $200 total it didn't turn out to bad.

I use the BullseyeXpress scope mount on 3 of my Mosins. The 30mm to go with my long range scope and the 25mm mount to go with my sportster and hunting mosins. They work great.

Well If you are Still Looking For that Scope and Mount Here are a few Link that I have Checked out and are still up and running. Prices are very good too.

Personally I am going with a Brass stacker Mount So I can Still use Iron Sights with a 2-7x32 Pistolero Illuminated. This Keeps me under the $130 ($110 Price tag+Taxes) Cost of the Rifle. Its hard for me to see paying more for a scope than I paid for the Rifle. This set up good for 400 Meters Easy. I do not see my self needing to Go MOA with a Mosin, That is what my Rem. 700 is for.

I just ordered me a brass stacker rear sight scope mount. It goes around the sight and sits above it so you can still use your irons. It looks much sturdier than the other rear sight mounts I have tried.
