Default savage axis .30-06 vs .308

Advertise Here

I've found an amazing deal on a scoped combo. Only problem is one is a .30-06 and the other is a .308. Which would ya'll recommend. I know availability of the .308 would far exceed the 06, but damn I love that 30-06

I'd pass on the Axis/Edge rifles since they are throw away rifles..you cannot mod your rifle if you decide you want/need something else. You can find the Stevens 200 for roughly $300, so I don't know what your Axis would cost you.

the availability of .30-06 isnt a problem.

i dont know why people seem to think 5.56, .308, and 7.62 will be readily available if tshtf. from what ive gathered, some couch comando made mention that military caliber ammo will be super easy to come by in a disaster, and all the other mall ninja's just repeat it like its gospel. you wont be resupplying at a military instulation or cop shop if a disaster strikes. stick to chamberings that are common and you will be fine.

the only thing that I'd be upgrading or adding would be a bipod to the front of the stock.

If you're talking about an Axis, that amazing deal had better be "free".

I would think .30-06 rounds would be easier to scrounge for than .308. I'm not an expert, but next to the .30-30 round the .30-06 is one of the most popular rounds in America. I'd also look at the ballistics of either round and think what you intend to use it for. I'd go .30-06 personally. I have also heard the Axis guns were throw aways, but if it goes bang it'll be better than nothing.

I would chose the 308, if you decide to add a semiautomatic in the future, maybe an AR 10 in a 308, then the same ammo..
Both will reach out and touch something out to 1000 yds, with the right gun, scope and know how with practice.
The 30-06 is more powerful, but not enough to matter to me, and if I am going to face a grizzly then I want something bigger anyway.
Buy quality once, buy cheap lots of times.
ps If possible I would get a magazine feed, so that reloads are faster, and have several mags on hand.

30-06 does not have enough power over the .308 to put it into the next "class" of rounds. Anything you can kill with an 06, you can kill with a .308. .308 is a little lighter, and a little easier to find surplus, and IMO, a more versatile round, but that's just my opinion.

One of the old timers I work with put it this way: "The .308 is the most perfect round ever made."

I will come out and say it. If SHTF trying to resupply ammunition from a Marine Base is a death wish.

Where was resupplying from a Marine Base mentioned? Please quote the relevant statement.

Which cartridge is cheaper and in more abundance? I know way more people that purchase cases of 7.62 than 30-06. There's probably a benefit of .357Sig over 9mm ballistics, but it's a no brainer which will be more available.

.357sig and 9mm to .30-06 and .308 is not apples and oranges. not even close. .30-06 is one of the most popular hunting rounds IN THE WORLD.
every single new hunting rifle design that comes out is chambered in the .30-06 with the exception of varmint rifles, and those based of the stoner action. the marlin series for example wasnt even chambered in .308 to begin with.
heck you can still find surplus military ammo for it if you look.
odds are, if you go to a gunshop, there will be more boxes of .30-06 on the shelf than any other chambering, it has more available loadings than any other chambering ever devised.

so lobotomi, i put it on you to tell us HOW military ammunition will be more available to us.

Amazingly with .308 you don't have to look. It's everywhere.

I'm not sure where you are, but here I can find more .308 than 30-06 in gun shops, pawn shops, even WalMart for far lower prices.

Now you claim it's military ammunition? I was unaware that civilians weren't allowed to purchase 7.62x51. I guess I'm grandfathered due to prior service.

I'll put it on you to expound on your previous statement.

How did you "gather" this information? What sources were used? Justify your statements with facts instead of opinions because that's exactly what you were bitching about to begin with.

I'll remind you of my statement concerning hypocrisy.

all you have is conjecture, but i need to produce facts.

um, yeah you can own 7.62/51. its called military surplus.

.308 and 06 run the same at my local gunshops. and walmart for that matter.

of course its harder to find surplus 06. hasnt been a standard issue chambering for some time.

and im assuming since you answered my question with a question, you cant back up that .308 ammo will be more available. im really not surprised. your full of **** and you know it.

I am seriously confused on the public turning on the Axis line of rifles. Unless all of the people that are doing so are bench rest queens arguing over which lube is more accurate.

I figure all the military ammo is gonna be off the shelves the first second of any trouble. Grabbed up by the store employees, along with the 00 buck!

Or worse, the ammo will already be gone since things won't just go up in smoke over night. There will be a build up.

Those of you with 10's of 1,000's of rounds will be on lists as remote hostile depots for law enforcement and the government.

You'll have to assume that you're full of **** also, because you've offered nothing of value concerning the availability of 30-06 over .308

Looks like you do a lot of assuming. What's even more funny is you got your poopy pants in a bunch not because of which is more available, but that I pointed out the stupidity or your original statement because you've "gathered" that some "couch commando"..... As if you've actually researched this matter. You're opinion is no more valid than that of who you criticize. It's hilarious that you'll still fail to understand even having this explained to you.

At one point there were over 300 boxes of Winchester 30-06 on the Walmart in my area with only 3 boxes of .308

If something happened at that time then there would be a lot more 30-06 at that point in time.

There are no constants from area to area, city to city or time to time. It is always a variable.

Popular rounds are easier to find under normal times and you usually have a harder time finding a variety of exotic rounds.

In really bad times you will find NOTHING at all. Or, if you find something chances are a firearm is with them. OR, if you find something you should have learned how to load your own rounds so you can salvage the rounds for components.
