Default Armalite AR10 Carbine .308...tell me why not

Advertise Here

I'm finalizing my decision on a primary SHTF weapon. Topping my list is an Armalite AR10 Carbine in .308; I would add MBUS sights, and eventually an Eotech.

Here's some background to make an informed comment: I'm ex-Army Infantry (very familiar with AR15 platform), we live in heavily wooded area in Maine and plan to Bug In (limited fields of fire), frequently have deer, moose and occasionally a bear on my property.

So, would this rifle make a good all-arounder? --Hunt, defend etc. I believe the Armalite does well on almost any kind of ammo (unlike some AR10s I've researched).

So, why shouldn't I get one?

Thanks

I think depending on the price you can find one it is a great choice. The only downside someone could bring up would be the weight of the weapon and the weight of the amount of ammo that can be carried.

Why not? Is there a space limit? What bothers me on forums when I search and find a something I'm looking for answer too, but instead of an answer I see a post about using the search button. I'm sure admin can just delete this whole thing if its a big issue

Cracked on by the veteran who joined last month. Nice.

My Armalite AR-10 was a sub-MOA rifle right out of the box. The .308 would stone any of the animals you mentioned. I would put something else on it besides an Eotech. If anything at least add a multiplier behind it.

There is no doubt its a fine weapon. The reason its not very popular is price. Your enemy is parts availability. If you can stock a spare upper and some spare lower parts I say if it makes you happy.....

There are other .308 options. The FAL is like an AK and takes about an hour to learn and figure out. Its a bit more sturdy but a bit on the heavy side.

I would go saiga in 308. It is 1000 if not 1200 dollars cheaper. And mine shots MOA all day long. But if money is not an issue you can not go wrong with the ar-10.

One of the reasons I shied away from the Armalite AR10 was the magazines. From everything I gathered, only Armalite magazines fit in the AR10. Magazines are not standardized like they are with the AR15s. It was one of the big factors that led me to the DPMS .308. Their magazines are cheaper, plus the Magpul polymer mags work in the DPMS and not the AR10s.

I dont think you can go wrong with the ARMALITE. If the price of mags does not bother you then you are good to go. Keep checking the GUNBROKER auctions and you will find a deal for mags. Also ARMAITE does a good deal sometimes for 5 mags for 125.00. The ARMALITEs are not to heavy in the A4 configs, mine feel lighter than my LAR 8 rifles or my Bushmaster AR 15 20 inch. ARMALITE customer service is top notch if you have a problem. I have returned two over the years and was taken care of. The issues I had were shipping damage not the manfactureing.

I lugged this beast around in the thickets of E.TX during summer hog hunts. It sure did put their taliwhackers in the dirt with Hornady 168 gr. TAP.

If you're going to spend that amount of cash, why not save a little longer and get a M1A?

I believe it would be fine for you. If you're like me you like to consider all the options. If you haven't looked around you might look at some others just to make sure you don't prefer them.

If you have any desire to look at something other than an AR then you might also check out the SCAR 17. It is light in weight compared to an AR in 308. I have the SCAR 16 and really like it (with lots of rounds down range). I have shot the SCAR 17 and will buy one soon. It was very easy to hold on target (light recoil for a 308, they have a large carrier and a brake). I believe the SCAR 17 is going to prove to be excellent just as the SCAR 16 has, but only time will tell.

I have looked at the SCARs-don't know what kind of track record they've got so far though.

Not much of one really, but if you dig in you'll find some of the info from where they have been deployed by our troops. They have undergone a lot of testing and some actual deployment. They are more proven on a two way range than some other choices since they had to go through all of the testing and are now deployed (in small numbers). I first heard about them from a friend who recently retired, he was a SEAL working overseas when he told me about them. Now a different friend of mine has them for use and sees them regularly in A-stan, he's a contractor working over there.

I'm also interested in seeing a price tag and some reports on the Colt - CM901, once available. http://www.defensereview.com/dr-excl...ry-forces-gif/

None of what I've said was meant to say their is a reason to push you away from your choice. Really just wanted to put those others out there for your consideration.

If price was no object, one of the rifles I'd be looking at would be an AR-10. The 7.62 NATO is the best performing "common" military rifle round. I saw Cheaper Than Dirt has 90's German 200 round surplus battle packs for $85.

What about a Remington 700 in 308 or 30-06, with a good scope.

Sounds like your AO has reasonable cover and concealment, and a good accurate bolt should do nicely.

Reload and get reloading supplies too.
