Default SHTF communication: HAM Radio

I've got some family that is into ham radio, and I'm thinking about getting my license and at least a hand-held rechargeable HT. What are your thoughts for SHTF communication?

HAM will probably be the best means of long range commo in a grid down scenario. Other radios are suited to short range... Check the forums that Kev listed. I'd go for it if you are considering!

Check out the books by ARRL, the National Association for Amateur Radio.
Start with Tech Q&A. Costs about $17.00.

Default has practice tests with the actual FCC questions. Study the book for a month or so and take 4-5 tests a couple times a day. By the time you run through the 100 tests you should be ready to go.
