Question Gun laws in Netherlands

Advertise Here

Can someone knowledgeable on the subject give a short summary of gun laws in Netherlands? I'm not Dutch, so I'm having some trouble understanding info on Justice Department's website even with Google Translate.

What I have found out thus far:
- guns are banned
- except if you are some kind of law enforcement
- or a hunter (in which case you need a valid hunting license)
- or a member of a shooting club (this part is not really clear)
- or a collector (in which case you need a special license and can't shoot)

I'm particularly interested in becoming a member of a shooting club. Some info on this subject would be appreciated. Like what do I need to do to be approved for a license, how much that would take and what that license allows. Also what laws apply for carrying and storage (like max X guns and max Y bullets per license).

Sorry, if this has already been covered. Could not find it using forum search.

Cheers from warm and sunny Netherlands

no sun in here? just rain

the gunlaw's quick brief
NO Full Auto's
the procedure goes like this
you take an apprenticeship in a shooting club
with minimal 18 shooting turns in a certain discipline (or in multiple)
EXAMPLE
18 times with in the handgun discipline
or 5 times handgun 5 times longgun and 8 times clay doves

you will get an inspection every year of youre storage
5 guns max
you need to have a licensed vault with a separate ammo vault
you can only have a gun that you use in a discipline
the max of ammo was i believe 2k (but not sure)
you cant have a criminal record
you have to be a dutch citizen

hunting;
you need to do a hunting exam (once)
you need a permit to hunt from the ground you want to go hunt on

you have to be 18+ anyway
and every year everything will come back
like the vault checks shooting turns checks etc

collectors can collect disabled guns (there has to be a certificate with it)
or guns pre 1870's (the may work but you cant get ammo unless you have a hunting permit or sporting permit)
you dont have to get papers etc

these things cant be mixed, everything has its own rules and are handled separate

there is no such thing as ccw or something
youre gun has to be @ the range or @ home except for hunting or to and from the range

in wat region do you live?
i have a small database of gunshops,
they can help you out with questions when you go around

If you do get a license, is it possible to use guns for self defense at home? Or are they simply dead weight?

A bit OT, but are knives completely outlawed? Is it OK to carry one? I don't mean kitchen knives by the way

if you use them for self defense, youll get a criminal record,
the only self defense possible here is equal force,
in real sthf i dont know,

knive rules;
banned; ballistic knives, stiletto's, large butterfly knives
you can have fixed blades, but you can only carry them when you use them (hunting/bushcraft/work)
folders and multitools aren't a problem,
to be shure, use a holder to have it on your belt,
collapsible battons pepperspray and flareguns are illegal as well except for cops (and sailors)
an security officer cant be armed (a flashlight, porto, multitool at the most)

Your Laws sound really oppressive. If I were Dutch I'd want to shoot myself!

If I could.....LOL

What if a woman is surrounded by a bunch of thugs? Her only legal option is to pray? I doubt that even a fit and ready person can overtake a small group with bare hands.

Anyway, this is going too much OT.

Were gun laws always like that in Netherlands? If not, when and why were they changed?

SADLY
basically yes,

the weapons law, evolved over time, bit by bit,
i cant find huge changes at once,
just small changes every year
one bigger thing i could find is that round the 1900's they began to change the firearms law to stop poaching

What 8valve says is correct on the gun laws.

In summary:

Target shooters:
requirements
- 1 year gun club membership
- at least 18 range trips each year.
- own a gunsafe.
- pass a background check.

limitations
- Anything that would be considered class III in the US is illegal in NL. (suppressors, full auto or burst, rifles under a certain length, etc)
- Max 5 firearms
- Apart from that there are not many restrictions, there's no ban on on mag capacity, handguns, semi auto's, ammunition types, etc.

There's also an exception for hunters which involves expensive exams and stuff, stuff that's hard to afford for the common man.

As per above, this is why all gun laws are bad laws.

Even when they make sense.

It is up to the individuals to decide what they wish to do.
