I found this picture of one type on Wikipedia:

It looks like there are a couple for sale at this site:

They look different than the above picture:

I got my Bidayuh Parang Elang in Sarawak when I lived there.
I never found it to be much more useful than a regular machete but they are cool.
Wouldn't want anyone swinging one at me.
The ex-wifes dad had her grandfathers.
It was .....soiled.

They're an Australian company, top quality and have a huge range of blades.
Start at the top and look at the knives of Java.
Survival Golok.

Sort of what you're looking for. Discontinued, though... I think.

There sure are a lot of variations on the parang-bolo- sundang. Looking at photos on google i dont see any like mine. I have, lot of people have contacts in Philippines, person could possibly get one sent. Ebay might have one like you want sometime.

rugercat45 .... I understand now why you are pushing all of these old threads to the top of the board.

You work for smkw correct?

Y'all planning on putting any more of the RTAK IIs up for sale again anytime in the near future?

I see rugercat45's ads are gone ..

Anyways, I've always thought that the one Cold Steel knife that sort of appealed to me was their barong, which is quite similar to the parang.

They are on sale now, being closed-out. Roughly $20.00 - $25.00 each - seems like a good enough deal that I am about to order one of each just for the heck of it because I've always wanted one.

12" and 18" long, I'll find a use for them somewhere around here.

I doubt the OP will be reading this as it's almost two years old...It got bumped so that ads for SMKW could be inserted...

I've posted this a few times:

You first have to decide if you want a true traditional blade or a modern rendition...

Well does a kukhri have to be a kukhri or a machete a machete? All they are big heavy knives, maybe long bladed, designed for chopping...There are lots of big heavy blades that do the same thing, shaped somewhat like them that comes from S.E.Asia--like the golok, parang, barong, sansibar etc.

I've listed these places before:
Traditional Filipino Weapon
Kris Cutlery
Valiant Co.
Have now dealt with all three, favourably...

Heinnie Haynes -- Great knife dealer...

Himalayan Imports
Kukri House
Official Kukri - 2nd site
Tora blades
Dealt with the first two, favourably and have read very good write ups about the third...

Here is the links to machete blades:
Machete Specialists

Condor Tool & Knife from El Salvador
Okapi from South Africa and
Ralph Martindale from the UK are both makers of budget lines
Tramontina site from Brazil is down
Canada Knives -- They have some very interesting kukhri influenced blades and being in CD$ means it's about 20% less for you Americans!

The thing is these aren't knives and shouldn't be sharpened like them but as chopping implements and beveled down like an axe...They don't have to be razor sharp...Then again it also matters what you're cutting...If going through heavy undergrowth with lianas everywhere then a sharper blade is needed then going through small bushes with clear underfoot...about a 30° bevel would be good for chopping and 25° for cutting...

Cold Steel

All offer machetes and other blade styles (kukhris etc.) very cheaply (<$30), designed to be punished, in various sizes and shapes and are available in NZ AFAIK...A fantastic series of kukhris is by Extrema Ratio in the $250 to $300 retail range but priced a lot cheaper then the Cold Steel top models and these, unlike CS, are worth it as is the briallant Entrek Destroyer $225...

Extrema Ratio KS

Entrek Destroyer

Both still bloody expensive for a hacker but half the price of CS and four times as good
