Default alternative zippo fuels

Advertise Here

i've been searching the forum and have only found a few alternatives

alcohol- burns too hot, wick goes back quick
charcoal lighter fluid - works but gunks up the wick also taste like crap
gas- dont know as there are many mixed reviews
paint thinner- supposedly works well

can anyone else add to the list?

does acetone work? or would that be the same outcome as alcohol? any else taste bad?

I have used paint thinner the only problem was that it burns with a lot of black smoke.

I've got to say, go with the liquid lighter fuel, from Ronson or Zippo or what have you, best results for me.

My dad used to fill up the Zippos with benzene. Worked great.
It was free and plentiful where he worked.
It's also a known carcenogen. Didn't know that at the time.
He died at 62 from cancer.
Who knows.

You beat me to it.

As a smoker I'm taking enough risks with the tobacco - no need to compound my stupidity with known carcinogen containing fuels as well. Just use the Zippo / regular lighter fuel - like what it's supposed to be used for.

I was just thinking the same thing. Denatured alcohol is used for making the lightweight stoves! I would think it would work for a zippo too!

Amazon sells vm&p naphtha. I found a vendor that sells it for $7.50 plus shipping.

I am pretty sure on my tank in the field, that my driver ran out of Zippo fuel on a gunnery and was using JP8 (Basically a higher grade diesel fuel) in his Zippo, I never even thought about it until now, so I'm pretty sure you can use just about anything in them, but from personal experience I use a Bic.

I used to fill mine with Coleman lantern fuel when I ran out of Zippo fluid. Not sure what it is, but it worked pretty well in the Zippo.

Cheap cologne works surprisingly well when needed. Expensive cologne may work as well but I've never bought any....
