That's cool.

I wonder what happened to the pig. Those things grow like a weed. They can be great companions. I raised one to about 400 lbs once. They butchered it while I was gone so I got a little turkey but a bear got him later.

Looks like he brought a pot, machete, and other things. Pretty solitary existence even if for only 300 days. Gotta wonder how many many more are out there in the pacific, shipwrecked or otherwise.

Without a doubt! However, could you handle the loneliness?

I still have Discovery`s "Alone in the Wild" in fresh memory!

Here is the series on youtube!

I watched that show when it was on. I'm much more introverted, apparently, or that guy is just a damn *****. I relish my time alone.

That would be pretty sweet to do and have the experience from. Being alone would be the hardest thing.

I'm with you on this one. I think it was long on "how I felt" and short on "here's what I did for 300 days." A year alone on a warm island sounds delightful to me.

That's pretty amazing. Humans are supposed to be social, even though I enjoy being by myself sometimes, I have to wonder if I could make it that long without having contact with other people.

I wonder if anyone has ever done an in-depth interview with any of the former Japanese soldiers (several were 'found' during the 1980s) that continued to live and survive on Pacific islands after being abandoned at the end of WWII?

I remember Ray Mears covered it in Extreme Survival series, I belive it was the Desert Island episode. One japanese continued living in the jungle for almoast 30 years. Took his former commander to persuade that the war accually was over!

That is survival! I dont know how he managed 30 years without socical company!

Something like 30 had been found last time I remember reading about it and that was almost 20 years ago. I know a few survived by looting food and clothing in nearby villages. In several cases, the locals knew they were there but left them alone. They are always given a hero's welcome in Japan. I seem to recall that mental illness was a common trait among them which doesn't surprise me from all those years in isolation.

Every seen the movie "Castaway"? It's a true story. The guy who worked for FedEx spent 5 years on and island, had no knife or firemaking stuff.

if you beleave that then i have a bridge to sell you.

Cast Away is a 2000 drama film directed by Robert Zemeckis and starring Tom Hanks. Hanks portrays a fictional FedEx employee who is stranded on an uninhabited island after his plane crashes on a flight over the South Pacific. The film depicts his attempts to survive on the island using remnants of his plane's cargo, as well as his eventual escape and return to society. Hanks was nominated for Best Actor in a Leading Role at the 73rd Academy Awards for his critically acclaimed performance.
