Any of you out there shot the M model SKS (AKA the sporter) and if you have do you prefer that over the type 56 Norinco SKS?

I have an older type 56 chinna one and love it. I keep it behind my truck seat as a EDC. I use tapco 20 rd mags with it. 3 inch groups at 100 yds.

Not an AR, but for a 100 bucks a good buy

Get the M-model.
Not easy to find now.
Uses AK mags which are still cheap.

Change the stock over to a Russian fiberglass stock.
You will love it.

do you have any problems with the mags not feeding properly? i picked up some steel 30 round duck bills and tried to put it on my type 56 , had feeding issues,so that is when i bout the m model.

I had some metal mags and they were junk.I had all kinds of failures, but I have never had a problem since i got the tapco brand ones. They really do make a difference. Buy two and try them, Your buy more shortly afterwards.

there are a few guys on the squad that have the type 56 with the tapco mags, they also said they didnt have any issues, but i didnt ask how much they shoot either. i personally do a bit more shooting than the average joe. i might pick one up just for the hell of it.

Don't own a M, but used one a few times. Every time I see one, it's over priced for my opinion. Any SKS will treat you well. I like the yugoslavian models, just had good luck with them. I have some 2" and better groups with the yugos.

Another route on the mags is the chinese star 20 round fixed magazines. If going the tapco mag route, look into the bolt modifaction. Otherwise it's real clumsy changing the magazines.

I like my SKS rifles stock except for converting the sights. I use either lyman 66 peep sights or I put a scout mount and a quality scout scope on it. I have a leupold LER scope on one (think a M6 model?). I also hav another with a used swift pistol scope. Both work great. Scout scopes makes an longer scope base, which is needed for the average length scope.

The best way to use AK mags are in an AK.

I own both...they shoot the same and are very accurate & dependable...the D or M models are easier to load using ak clips, but they cost more...the standard sks is a great rifle for the $$$!

I agree, i too own both and enjoy shooting them, the type 56 is better for the long distances , the M- model i have only shot that one out to 300 yards and is fair in the accuracy dept. but i love both of them.

Go to tickbitesupply.com for fiberglass stocks.

These are all made for standard SKS's, but you can modify them so that the M/D-model mag-well adapter fits inside.
All you'll need is a dremmel and some fiberglass filler for boats--and you will be there.
I've seen it done, so it can be done.
You will have to transfer some pins, etc. from the wood stock to the fiberglass stock.
Some drilling/mods are required.

If you actually get to the point of fitting it to the reciever--PM me first.
Fitting has to be done first, then the mods to the mag-well next.
And you must fit it correctly so it goes together very tight and things line up correctly first.

I know what to do and can supply some photos.

You're welcome.
Now these stocks are 40 hondos each.

I bought two out of a barrel of surplus for 5 each 15 years ago.

Get one of each i did and an AK to be picked up very soon. Love to shoot them and they are more accurate than most say. Each rifle was built for a use in mind. Use it for that purpose and it will serve ya well. Keep it clean my pet peeve.

Yes they do.
Sometimes they even come with a cleaning kit.
They're just like wood stocks--with the metal butt-plate and hinge door.

I will give you a link to a special kind of butt-pad to use also.
Let me find it. This one is ribbed, rubber and very inexpensive.

Best and cheapest on and only modification I've ever done on an SKS was to replace the front sight post with a TechSight target post it's about $7 shipped.

I didn't see the need for the rear peep but some may http://www.tech-sights.com/
