when you consider the mental status of the people, you need to remember these people KNOW all "this" will end in 60-90 days.

My issue with the first season was the "skill set" of the group. They had a computer scientists, electrical engineer, nutritionist, and the like.
I want to see a group like: fast food cook, 7-11 clerk, forklift driver, real people

It has to be fake, or there would have been some dead marauders. At least if I was there they would have, break in and destroy our supplies

I like to look at these shows as a mental exercise for me, take the given scenario and think through what I would do.

Biggest thing I learned from watching, don't join no damn colony!!!

I watched the first season and found it interesting. These people knew it was a show and that it was very short term but still they began disintegrating after a while. I thought it was an eye opener. I suggest people watch it just to see how their friends and relatives are going to end up reacting if something does happen. (To be honest, I think some of the people here who complain the most about the masses will probably become casualties of their over confidence. During natural disaster it is often the people who you least expect that come through.)

I enjoyed the show. But as far as a learning tool all I got out of it was not what to do.

Well in watching the last season, I found it to be entertaining, and at times mind provoking. I mean, some of the things that they came up with (even if the "script" called it out) gave me ideas that I most likely would have never tried. With my past I would have been more on "guard the wire" mentality instead of thinking about some solar panels on a roof across the way and then making a sun tracker (and I am a EE, would have just used them) not sure I would have been looking for the things they came up with. And, don't really care if they were "scripted" there were ideas that I believe most of us would not have come up with. Did anyone really think they were going to play out a real life threatening show? Take what you will or can from it, and if that is not enough, give the show your better ideas or produce your own show. Just my 2 cents. I don't know anyone with the skill set that would do a complete job in a real situation.

I missed quite a few episodes last season and didn't even see how it ended... but I'm looking forward to the new season.

Here's my take on it, and I'll admit up front that I like the show....

First, you can bet that in the real scenario, there'd be firearms. But since it's TV, that facet is suspended.

Deal with it.

The fact is, most of the sheeple that would be in this scenario probably don't have a firearm, the knowledge, or the will to use one. So that sets us apart... but what if you can't get to your guns? What happens if you're not home, and for whatever reason (the one scenario you didn't plan on), all you can lay hands to is a tire iron or a 2x4? Part of being a prepper is preparing for the worst case scenario.

To me, part of the worst case scenario is NOT being able to get to all the stores I've set aside, such as family, food and guns (in that order). In that sense, the show does in fact present a real scenario.

People have commented about the 'idiots' and their lack of skills in the cast. I agree that some of the skill sets have been picked to make it easier to demonstrate survival and rebuilding skills that the producers want to exhibit to get ratings. Let's not lose sight of the ultimate goal of the show.... ratings, not accuracy. If you had a dozen fry cooks and 7-11 clerks, you would have a much more realistic, if not short lived and boring scenario. Those would probably be the 'vikings' in the Colony scenario, because I think we all agree that those that can't 'do' for themselves will resort to taking from those who can. All it takes is one person who will promise them what they're looking for. These 'sheeple' as we call them will be our biggest obstacle when and if TSHTF... those that don't die off immediately will re-form into the mob and the raiders.

But I digress.

Back to the skillsets. Even the fashion model in season 2 has her uses. She can haul water, gather wood, and forage (altho not alone apparently, and THAT scenario was definitely toned down for TV. IMHO, that would have definitely NOT have had a happy ending for the young lady). In any group of people, there will be those who can, those who can learn, and those who can do what they're told.

Just like the real world.

Those in the group who have no skills can do the grunt work for those who do have the skills to set about building, etc. In these scenarios, it's not just food, water and security that are in short supply..... time is also a precious commodity, and there's no way the do-ers can do all that needs be done by themselves. Having the unskilled laborers provides a secondary echelon of people who can be tasked to see to the basics of the daily needs, while the skilled workers can go about improving the situation, wheter it be technology, security, infrastructure, or whatever.

I guess my point is, yes, it's TV. As TV goes, it's not bad TV. I learned a few things last season, and I've learned a few things this season. Are some of the premises silly? Yes... But let's face it... the thought of a dozen hardened preppers with the will and the means to kill looters and who can grow wheat on concrete and eat live snakes for dessert would scare the hell out of most people. Your average TV viewer would turn off the first episode.
A dozen seasoned preppers would be the most boring thing to watch because there would be no drama. Everyone would know what needs to be done and set about doing it efficiently and without any conflict.

So take it for what it is. Watch it if you want to, and if you find it inane or silly, turn off the tube and go reload some ammo.

Ok, just watched the first episode. GAY GAY GAY GAY! I knew I shouldn't have watched. I KNEW it would tick me off. And it did. It's like they took everything I hated about the first season and multiplied it by a GAYZILLION! The rational and reasonable part of me realizes what everyone is saying...it's just a tv show meant to entertain and maybe even inform. And it's also a lamer take on the show Survivor. But I can NOT get past the way it's touted as reality. I give them props for being "edgy" and throwing in a fight scene meant to show some real danger and maybe even "scare" the colonists, but COME ON! I noticed this same thing in this "fight" as I noticed as a teenager whenever I got bored enough to watch Jerry Springer. There were no fists thrown. Not a one. I DID however see one of the mob drop an elbow across the back of one of the colonists. I'm not going to lie and say that I'd wade into them at the beginning with a steal pipe, because I'm on a game show. I also wouldn't be much of a bad ass once I got hit in the face with pepper spray. But I can guaran-damn-tee you that the first elbow that hits me or the first hard show I feel, tv cameras or not, I'm swinging. Blind or not. They would have had to kick me off the show. I would have followed them out. Actually, I probably would have tried to kick the leaders ass and then ask the producers if I could lead the next raid on the colonists. Kidding, but I really can't stomach this show. I'd rather just watch a movie.

Yeah it was so josht josht josht josht!

Pick a different word josht. Lame, unrealistic, aggravating, or even stupid is a better word to use if you didn't like it. I don't think your use of the word gay was appropriate to describe your feelings about the show.
