I like the idea of a freezer full of food. I've also considered what I would do should the power go out. My first step was to buy a 5000 Watt portable generator. My second preparation was to get an old comforter and dedicate it to covering the freezer for insulation to help keep the cold in and the hot out. We moved our freezer to the coolest room in our home. I discussed with my wife the importance of keeping the freezer door closed should the power go out. If things get really bad, I have a smoker that I will use to create as much jerkey as I can and the rest of the food will go to my nearest neighbors for one last BBQ.

I also have a freezer in my basement full of food just for when the SHF that I constanly rotate new food into. Of course the big concern has always been what to do when the power goes out. I've done a lot of research but has anyone hooked up a freezer to a solar panel?

The vertical smoker can be used to make jerky. So a lot of the venison will be made into jerky so it will last longer. ![]() ![]() |

I am going to cook what ever she wants - ribs, brisket, chicken. Here is a picture of the lower shelf of the freezer. The only reason why the rice and beans are in the freezer is to kill weevils. After a week or two in the freezer, the rice and beans are taken out and stored in boxes or in the cabinets. ![]()

The rice and beans are left in the freezer until I say something like "oops, I forgot about those packages, its past time to get them out." So its not a direct measure, some of those packages have been in there for a month or so. I just got 9 pounds of rice, so its time to swap around. |

Hi Kev,
I’ve never found live bugs in packaged grains or beans, only in grains/beans I’ve bought loose in bins at health food stores. I thought that being in the package deprived them of oxygen so that eggs couldn’t hatch, etc. Have you found live bugs in packaged grains or beans? VW |
