Default What are the 3 most reliable combat rifles?

Advertise Here

I am looking for a new SHTF rifle. My beef with the AR is that its long term field reliability is not what I want. My problem with the Ak is the accuracy is bad past 300 yards.

I want a rifle that is as reliable as an AK 47 and as accuret as an M16 while weighing around 5 pounds. Anyone have a FN SCAR, micro tech etc? Whats hardcore reliable?

5 lbs, are you serious?

PTR91 for cost vs. performance. I have no problem with 8 inch shoot n see targets at 400 yards.

Also M1a, or FAL aren't bad choices either. That'd be my three as far as post WWII reliable, and accurate rifles.

...But 5lbs, really?

Not even an AR15 bone stock can touch that.

The 3 most reliable combat rifles would be:
M1 Garand, .30-06
M14, .308
AK47, 7.62

Agreed, Have you ever tried to shoot something at 300 yards? It's a heck of a lot harder to do than you think. I've seen a bunch of very good hunters that have shoot there whole life miss Elk at 300 yards in the field.... Heck I've seen a bunch miss at 100.
Shooting in the field and shooting off a bench is NOT the same thing. I personally would not want to shoot that far in some kind of conflict. Get the he!! out of dodge brother!
Even the troops call in artillery or air support when taking LR fire.

Most reliable?
M1 Garand
M-14/M1A
Mini-14/30

You say you already have a M1A but your worried about reliability and long range shots? What gives.....
You already own the most reliable long rang military weapon on the market. And no, they don't make a 5lb M1A

I couldn't agree more, except that if SHTF range can be your friend with great optics, and a good rifle vs 5.56 robocoppers...follow common sense and you'll get out of dodge before arty or air is available.

If the OP has an M1a I really don't see the need for anything else but ammo, and practice time. Maybe a set of weights to work out if you can't handle anything but a 5lb rifle.

You're comparing two completely different platforms designed around very different philosophies.

Who wouldn't want the best of both worlds?

Again, define the mission statement and use the appropriate tools.

Understand, the two characteristics that you are trying to merge into one rifle are diametrically opposed. That is to say, when you slide towards accuracy, you lose "some" reliability and vice verse.

One of the things that make the AR platform so accurate is the gas system...there is no piston moving back and forth to adversely affect accuracy, that, and the fact that an AR is relatively tight compared to an AK variant.

And of course, this all depends on what one particular individuals definition of "accurate" is. Also, 300 yards or meters is not that far to begin with when talking about distances and rifle cartridges (combat distances are a completely different animal). There are some who can hit targets as far as 500 yards with an AK variant....I'm not one of them, but I don't discount an AK's accuracy.

Define reliable?...If a weapon needs daily maintenance or cleaning to keep it reliable. Does that make it less reliable than an AK variant? To some this is perfectly acceptable...for others, not so much. Then there is the whole "bury it in the mud and jump up and down on it" mentality.....If that's the criteria that an individual needs to be met than so be it...I don't get it, but I won't judge it.

There's more to this that others will clarify....

For the record, I love Ak's, AR's, FAL's, M14's, Garands, bolt actions, 1911's, glocks....I'm a right tool for the job kind of guy.

lots of people talk about the reliability of the AR. I have owned many AR's and have never had any problems. I have a bushmaster that i have shot tens of thousands of rounds through with nothing more than the occasional jam.

I think the AR/AK/FAL/m14/Garands...all great guns

Okay... You could get a piston operated AR-15 or M-4 clone in a variety of calibers. It could be .223/5.56, 6.8 SPC, 6.5 Grendel and .204 Ruger.

You can get an AK type rifle in 5.45 by 39 cartridge which will give you about 500 to 600 meters of shooting distance on a silhouette target. You can get an AK in .223/5.56 caliber which also gives you more distance than any of the 7.62 by 39 boomsticks.

My suggestions is to consider going with an AK in 5.45 by 39 with a folding stock on it and mount a Texas dogleg on it. The Texas dogleg lets you mount any red dot or amber dot scope or telescope right over the bore line of the rifle for better accuracy. A good rifle with a decent round with a sling, folding stock and decent sighting capability, what's not to like?

How about what ever gun (#1) you have, that will fire (#2), that (#3) you can handle.
Everyone has one that they like, but you have to feel comfy with it.
