A couple of weeks ago, my buddy gave me an extra 8 1/2 cases of MREs ( Meals Ready to Eat). When the MREs were brought home, I did not have the extra room for them, but I'am not going to say no to free food stocks.
My wife and I went to wal-mart, bought a plastic shelving system, cleaned out a spot in my sons closet, and organized the MREs according to the test/inspect date. Top shelf - various backpacks - maxpedition vulture-ii, condor-ii and sitka gearslinger Second shelf from top - The cases there were already opened, nearest test dates. Third shelf from top - test / inspect date towards that end of 2010 Bottom shelf - test / inspect date in 2011 Last edited by kev; 05-15-2010 at 11:40 AM.. |

Who gives away 8 1/2 cases of MRE? I hope you compensated this 'buddy".
Also, one tornado will provide folks in the next county with ALOT of gear and food.......not to mention a house fire............with the tornadoes here lately, folks are rethinking stocking everything in the house.......better to sink a container in the ground and store stuff there. |

You should have seen our group during the year Y2K scare. We were having "round table" meetings, taking inventory, discussing preps, plans, food, ammo, weapons,,,,,. To get ready for Y2K, we cut like 4 or 5 truck loads of oak firewood - to use in bar-b-q pits. 8 1/2 cases of MREs aint nothing compared to buying cases of 9mm 115grain FMJ bullets for reloading. We used to sit down and reload 1,000 rounds of 9mm in 1 hour with 2 progressive presses. Back in the 1990s, several of us would make trips to the Houston gun show to pick up magazines, parts,,,,.

Lack of time, tools, funds, space, and more prohibit this activity. I would probably be canning if I could.

Kev, why organize by inspection date and not content? All my cans of sardines [for example] are together; I'd think that the same would apply to MREs...so...? Is there some constraint imposed by the inspection date, like they expire quickly and you really have to watch that date [obviously, I don't know an MRE from a can of chili, which is why I'm asking so if/when we acquire some I can use this information].

MRE's go well with your new boat, Kev. I keep 6 of them in mine.

I have three of those Plano shelf sets that are going in the garage of my new house (God willing and Underwriters willing.)

We just opened a 23-year old Beef Stew MRE. It was still pretty tasty. We had a few people compare it with a new one and about half of them liked the old one better. We've got a video that we'll be posting about it soon. Pretty decent shelf life.

Very cool Kev! Do you or anyone else know how rat proof the boxes are that the MRE's come in?
I've got a 55 gallon drum with four cases of Military MRE's in there that I'd like to free up for dry storage but don't want to risk the rats gettin at em. I imagine the military take this into consideration when they determine the manufacturing spec's of the boxes right? |

Agreed, huge over site on their part. I have received packages from them that didn't have their logo on it however. Strange.

Folks who insist on storing them in a meat locker or other dedicated cold storage area are lucky to have those resources available. But, there is no shame in storing them in a root cellar or "cool" or wine closet.
