n95 mask should be more than you need the ash isn't dangerous. You can buy n95 maskes from homedepot or any hardware store. If you really want to get hardcore and waste some money you could buy n100 or p100 like this

http://cgi.ebay.com/3M-8293-P100-RES...item563194fb29
or

(not my auction)

As for gases, we would need to know what you mean by this. As i understand it the gases put off by a volcano cannot be filtered by normal mask you would need a supplied air setup. Easily place to buy these are from paint shops to use in painting booths. My guess is you wouldn’t really need this unless you live by somewhere that you plan to need a mask to get away from.

here is a link to fema valcano ash info.

The ash is one thing. There is also toxic gases that are emitted too. I woulld get a full or half face modern respirator. Something approved for volitale organic vapors. This charcoal filter cartridge also has a n95 or n99 dust filter. For severe climates like a heavy ahs cloud, I would suggest a prefilter element too.

Remember when Mount St Helens blew??

People had to clean out their car's air filters all the time, got clogged up big time.

check out grainger.com. they usually have industrial rated protective masks.

survivalist note for SHTF- if you have a respirator and want to the make the filter cartridge last long, you can use a clean water-damped sock over the cartridge to help pre-filter the larger particles.

Are we talking protection locally, or a few hundred miles away. IF far away a generic dust mask should be OK.

Volcanic ash can be DEADLY. One cm of ashfall soaked with rain will become heavy enough to collapse most roofs.

When breathed in, the ash will combine with the moisture in your lungs. Eventually you drown in what's essentially liquid concrete. Volcanic as was a principal binder used vin Roman concrete.

If you're not close to the volcano, I'd just go with a high quality dust mask. They're easier to breath with than those N95s and such. They also don't clog as easily. The higher quality ones are made specifically for fine, dangerous powders. Check your local hardware store. Plus they're small, so you can carry spares, or replacement filters for a mask, if you get the mask type.

I picked up a couple of these. They were in great shape and appear to work, though I haven't tested thoroughly.

Probably better than nothing, but I'd rather have an N95 mask at the very least. They're cheap now that H1N1 fizzled out.

thats a good mask. it's Czech. but the Germans buy them now for their troops. most i've seen are new and not assembled. there every bit as good as our old M82. BUT nothing will work for volcanic ash, very long. it will kill you or destroy your lungs over time.
I was 1000 miles away from magmaplasmic dust, you could not even see it in the air hardly but it hurt to just breath.

So you say that Gas masks from say a salvation army store are good? I picked up a couple of the best dustmasks I could find. They didn't have a rating but they do have a good fit. They had a Danish design and a USSR one. But what about filters?

Im hoping that could be enough if the toxins/ash is far enough away! Im pressuming that ash etc can last for weeks even months and the bandana would be easier to wear that long. Im thinking also the light medical face covers/masks also! But hard core ash/toxin in area the nice ones mentioned in thread would be needed. Having light and gas masks would be good! Thanks for the great thread OP!
