Default Obama seeks to ban recreational fishing

This one hits close to home...

http://sports.espn.go.com/outdoors/s...ory?id=4975762

Quote:
The Obama administration will accept no more public input for a federal strategy that could prohibit U.S. citizens from fishing the nation's oceans, coastal areas, Great Lakes, and even inland waters.

This announcement comes at the time when the situation supposedly still is "fluid" and the Interagency Ocean Policy Task Force still hasn't issued its final report on zoning uses of these waters.

That's a disappointment, but not really a surprise for fishing industry insiders who have negotiated for months with officials at the Council on Environmental Quality and bureaucrats on the task force. These angling advocates have come to suspect that public input into the process was a charade from the beginning.

"When the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) completed their successful campaign to convince the Ontario government to end one of the best scientifically managed big game hunts in North America (spring bear), the results of their agenda had severe economic impacts on small family businesses and the tourism economy of communities across northern and central Ontario," said Phil Morlock, director of environmental affairs for Shimano.

"Now we see NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) and the administration planning the future of recreational fishing access in America based on a similar agenda of these same groups and other Big Green anti-use organizations, through an Executive Order by the President. The current U.S. direction with fishing is a direct parallel to what happened in Canada with hunting: The negative economic impacts on hard working American families and small businesses are being ignored.

"In spite of what we hear daily in the press about the President's concern for jobs and the economy and contrary to what he stated in the June order creating this process, we have seen no evidence from NOAA or the task force that recreational fishing and related jobs are receiving any priority."

"First they came ..." is a popular poem attributed to Pastor Martin Niemöller (1892–1984) about the inactivity of German intellectuals following the Nazi rise to power and the purging of their chosen targets, group after group. In Niemöller's first utterance of it, in a January 6, 1946 speech before representatives of the Confessing Church in Frankfurt, it went (in German):

First they came for the communists, and I did not speak out--
because I was not a communist;
Then they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out--
because I was not a socialist;
Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out--
because I was not a trade unionist;
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out--
because I was not a Jew;
Then they came for me--
and there was no one left to speak out for me.

OMGGGGA!!!

Will they just not be content until we have to get a license to breathe and pay a tax on air?

That's it, I'm drilling piles a few miles offshore and building my own island nation. (As soon as I get $2B to spend )

Hang on, hang on. I thought I just read that the US Prez is wanting to ban public fishing....like, altogether????

How can that be?!?!? It's gotta be a spoof article!

If this is real, my spidey-senses are tingling--I smell a for-real civil war coming.

"Attention US Citizens, for the first time in history, Canada is now a freer country than your own!"

Obama formed the task force on June 12, 2009:

http://www.whitehouse.gov/administra...atives/oceans/

But read between the lines..

Quote:
"The Task Force has a wealth of opportunity to make our oceans, coasts and Great Lakes healthier - both environmentally and economically."

The recommendations and frameworks developed by the Task Force will be cost effective and improve coordination across federal agencies. The Chair will terminate the Task Force upon the completion of its duties.
Uh, so when exactly do you consider their "duties" to be "completed" when you have an agenda that is the very definition of vague? This group isn't going away anytime soon.

From the user comments:

The comment period on the report closed, as comment periods always do. The headline makes this fact seem extraordinary, when what was actually extraordinary was that CEQ extended the comment period to 60 days in order to accommodate concerns, comments, critiques, and yes, even commendations from the public and stakeholders. The Interim Framework does not close off fishing areas to recreational fishermen, but rather sets forth a process for better coordination and management of uses, something that can, in fact, help protect areas for fishermen. To conflate concerns about how fishery management is being addressed with unfounded fears that better planning and more efficient, coordinated, ecosystem-based management (which is the mainstay of coastal and marine spatial planning) will somehow create a worse situation for recreational fishermen is misguided at best and more likely completely disingenuous. Rather than stirring up anger based on unfounded fears and encouraging users to barrage their Congressmen with inaccurate portrayals of the process, you should recommend to your readers that they become actively involved in the coastal and marine spatial planning process as it -- one hopes -- moves forward to contribute to a better overall national ocean policy.

I'm not a fisherman and I don't live in America but I would oppose this, just like I would want fishermen to stand by my side in defense of my hobby (you know what that is).

Jane Lubchenco is the head of this task force. She's also a strong believer in Climate change and apparently has never had a real job.

Yeah, maybe I need a tin-foil hat-- but it wouldn't take much for one to connect the dots here.

Sounds a bit like the health care debacle Obama is pushing these days and we see how open, transparent, corrupt and Bipartisan thats been...but thanks for assuring me all my fears are unfounded and that my government knows whats best for me. I feel so much better now.

Hey, Harmless, apply to Pelosi, Reid, Dodd and Obama for a Stimulus Package Monetary Grant to help build your island nation. Save room to rent some land or whatever to some of the rest of us.

I don't think that this one will fly, Orville. Sport fishing is just much too popular for one nutjob to simply ban it, even with an Executive Order. Obama trying to ban sport fishing would be the final nail in the Democrats' coffin. There wouldn't be enough Democrats left in both houses of Congress to form a ping-pong team.
