I have read about earthships.
And I have a health concern regarding the use of tires.
It seems that the entire structure is built with tires.
It is my understanding that tires release gasses, and if the earthship
is built with tires, that the tires would release those gasses
during the life of it. And the people inside would be
breathing these fumes, especially in the summer heat
You would have indoor pollution....
Can any of you comment on this, do you know
anything about this ?
What say you ?
Tires mostly out gas a few months after manufacture. Used tires are pretty much out gassed. Your main worry is more the road contaminants that the tires have picked up. By the time your done stuccoing the walls about all you're gonna be exposed to is white washed mud. You ground water may pick up a bit of funk from the tires but I doubt anything will out gas from the covered wall mass.
yup... I'd check out some of the earthship websites... most of the research I've done supports that.... outgas is gone by the time you are using those old tires..
Why would I be more concerned about used tires that are full of dirt and covered in concrete/stucco than I would be pressure treated wood or fiberglass insulation?
I do not know much regarding construction &
different health issues.
Could you please elaborate on the problems with
pressure treated wood & fiberglass insulation ?
And when is this used ?
So, if there is a health problem, I could avoid it.
Thanks for your input!
I did not even think of that. The smell would
probably drive me a bit nuts...
What state did you stay in, was it New Mexico ?
What made me doubt was the fact that if
Canada supposedly does not allow
building with tires for environmental reasons, I figured something was up..
Even if the gasses are gone because they are used tires, then why
does Canada see them as an environmental problem ???
If anyone knows more about this pleast post!
Many thanks!
It was in California. Smelled like my Grandfathers basement where he kept the winter tires. Only 5 times worse. They eventually had to tear it down because of some code thing.
I was thinking of burying a container dwelling under a dome of earth filled tires once, then I realized that I would have to tamp all those tiresfull of dirt. I bought a house. Kept the woman happier.
