I’ve seen a rather high number of posts about that liberals basically can’t be survivalists and some posts that they aren’t welcome. I think it would be interesting to see a poll about what people in general think about this subject. So do you think that liberals can be survivalists?

Sure they cancelled

Sure a liberal can be a survivist, only the mind set will differ. More likely to face chaos as a group rather individually. More likely to defend and shelter the infirm the elderly and what many would consider useless eaters.

The concenus of most that a lib simply waits for the government to save them is just a feel good catch phrase.

However if you are referring mainly to city folk they are a mix of dems and GOP and most of them will expect gov aid. Many will wait too long

Survival is a state of mind independent of politics. This liberal Vietnam vet is prepared.

Prep is costly in both time and money. How many are prepared to live a year without any outside flow of resources. A survivor lives the lifestyle.

Hey WORKQUIK. I thought on what you said. I like your saying, "a survivor lives the life style".

But on your liberals would take in the useless eaters.

I guess this would be dependent on weather or not they are progressives. History has shown they would euthanize them. A lot of the past liberal/ progressive regimes have done this.

I do question though, if you don't expect the government to save you. Are you a progressive

People tend to oversimplify what a liberal is. Liberals have a strong sense of community. They care about what's going on in their town, their neighborhood, their state etc. Most of the hardest working people I know are liberals, although some of them are conservatives including my family on my dad side which is Mexican. All of my Mexican relatives are very conservative and very hard-working.
Please don't confuse well for moms who have anchor babies and people addicted to food stamps as liberals. The so-called liberals really do not have any kind of political directions or principles. I know it's easy to group all liberals into a box that the media tells you is correct. But we don't follow just one leader or direction. To think that is silly, just as silly as assuming that all conservatives agree completely with Jeb Bush. For Donald Trump. Or Herman Cain

I have found myself asking this same sort of question, and judging by the responses, it's a pretty complex thing to think about. What sort of liberal are we talkin' about here? A social liberal? A financial / economic liberal? Highly educated ********? Intellectual hillbillies? Right-wing treehuggers? Hippies with a concealed carry license? Vegan NRA members?

I was reminded of a tale of 2 cities...

we all know and saw how New Orleans folks handled a disaster...every man for himself, looting, chaos..violence perpetrated by thugs, gangs, and even LEO upon citizens

not long after that there was a major California fire that forced evac..and the news folks were showing people setting up their pretty camping tents/gear at a local stadium..all nestled and cozy..no violence, no looting..just a bunch of Left Coast hippies all enjoying some impromptu camping fun with their families.

so I don't know that you can place a liberal tag on people when it comes to shtf response..

I also recalled a weekend camp trip i was on with my family..all the adult kids had their spouses up with us...we took up several tent sites and the wife and I had our travel trailer as the hub.
next to us was 2 families of sincerely hippy routes...their kids were wonderful free spirits (probably named "Free" for that matter)
and they were all enjoying the outdoors in basic tent camping mode.
we all had nice conversations with each other..etc
later on that day couple of my son-in-laws hard turned conversations to their gun hobby..nothing ******* nor outlandish..certainly not threatening...
but you woulda thought they were talking serious porno jokes in bad taste or something as the hippy neighbors abruptly distanced themselves...guns were so tabboo in their world.

still...as for surviving some hard times...they'd be fine in most respects as long as they wouldn't have to defend themselves.

Yes, Liberals can be survivalists because most Liberals turn to Liberalism for pragmatic reasons. You want to get ahead in American life then you glom on to the dominant ideology. You want a good job, lots of friends and more sex with women, you become a Liberal. When the SHTF and the institutions of American society collapse 90% of Liberals will forget their learned helplessness and become rugged individualists in about 5 seconds.

I am more or less a communist in my political beliefs. Greatest for of goverment ever devised that will never work. Due to the nature of humanity communism will never succeed on a wide global scale. Look atthe communist nations on the planet, the only one that could be called a succes is China, and they're more capitalist than we are in a lot of ways. Heck, one of the stars on the Chinese flag is for the patriotic capitalists.

That little rant aside. I and my family are very much survivalist / preepers. If for no other reason, than that the fud can't keep it together with the amount of debt we have. We ( my family ) live by " buy it cheap, & stack it deep". Everything from beans & bullets to silver & toilet paper. I drive a m35a2 & a xm818, we garden and preserve. We've managed to get almost completely off grid ( still need solar panels ). My wife's valentine's present this year was a new wood cook stove. Bye bye electric range. I'm learning to balcksmith. We homeschool & keep the kids in prepping. They've had their own Ar for 5 years now & not those ppiddly little .22 conversion. How about a almost 10 year food supply now. I keep a kalashnikov in the prius right next to my wife's vegan snacks. And a whole multitude of other day to day lifestyle / prepper choices.

so you tell me. Can a leftist be a survivalist or a prepper.

“I don't know a lot of liberals....”
Sure you do. Today’s definition of “liberal” is anybody who isn’t always in lockstep with extreme Tea Party conservatism. Even if you’re a card carrying Republican, if you even hint at any disagreement with their views or are willing to compromise then you are labeled a no-good Socialist Communist expletive-deleted destroyer of America. So anybody you know who admits to being moderate, or independent, or is embarrassed by what others say publically about our President, is a liberal.

Now, do you still like them?

That seems like a snarky and bias post. People that attend TEA Party Rallies, are the most honest open hard working people in this nation. If it weren't for them the welfare free loaders would not have a pot to **** in

For the record the socialist communist are still progressives

While Liberals can be survivalists and/or preppers, I would argue there is a fairly strong correlation between survivalism/preparedness and individual responsibility, and there is a fairly strong correlation between individual responsibility and Libertarianism and "fiscal conservatism", but certainly not "social conservatism".

Personally, I do my best to prepare, and I value individual responsibility, therefore I value individual freedom and smaller government. I favor lower taxes, lower government spending, and less government intrusion into personal matters.

I believe in eliminating or at least greatly reducing income taxes and welfare programs, and I don't believe the government should play any role in healthcare or marriage.

I believe the government should only be involved in matters that ONLY the government can provide (national infrastructure, national defense, etc), as individual freedom of choice results in a far more efficient allocation of resources.

For whomever is interested, there's a liberal-oriented survivalism community (though they don't call it that, since "survivalism" carries negative connotations to them) focused on climate change and ecological/social collapse, calling themselves "Deep Adaptation":

The main group is focused on feels and mutual support, but there's a subgroup "Practical Deep Adaptation" which is more closely congruent with practical prepping. There's so much overlap between "Practical DA" and survivalism that it makes me want to tear my hair out, since there's no practical way our two communities could possibly mix. I'm a habitual fence-straddler, with a foot in just about every camp, but know that's not everyone's cup of tea.

Practical Deep Adaptation, on Facebook:

I'm mostly mentioning it here so that if liberals do come here and feel out of place, and want to work with other preppers of similar mindset, there they are.
