New Here
I'm much older then many here I'm sure age 66 soon to be 67. Grew up the old ways, pretty poor as a kid, folks finally did better when I was in high school then able to send me to college.
My husband and I have worked hard in our lives, don't do debt, have provided for ourselves.
We have some rent houses and hubby plans to work to 68 or hopes to, depends on the availiability of projects. Even though he makes a very good salary we save religiously, and we still think we won't have enough, he is working longer as our savings are earning nothing and haven't in years. We don't invest in the gamble of the stock market, can't afford to lose the money.
He and I have built and remodeled houses, nothing he can't do. I can, sew, raise a garden, raise and dress out chickens, and care for them, but I managed to work for 30 years, was an accountant for years till I had to throw in the towel with sick mom and DD. I manage our few rentals, repairs, taxes, and all related activities.
We now have decided to move back to where we were from 30 years ago, its a rural southern Indiana sitting, currently we live near Houston. Hubby never really wanted to leave so is thrilled to come back. I got worried that in a financial collapse of the country I think is coming, we don't need to be near any big city, even though we lived rural the city is coming to us. I saw the mass migration to and through our area after Katrina and it scared me. That was when I got a permit to carry, since I have let it lapse. We have plenty of guns they are inherited, but I need to buy more ammo.
I have a lot stocked up foodstuffs, and other products and I intend to stock more, But I just spent $300 to $400 on foodstuffs and cleaning products and got very little. But each month the same amount will buy even less so stocking up more now. Will have another big garden out this summer, easier to raise foodstuffs here.
I am worried about the future, but this has been coming for decades. And yes we want our medicare and SS, that was built into our plans from day 1.
We don't expect anyone will take care of us, but we still hope to receive what we worked for. However our situation is complicated by a mentally challenged daughter to support. We are trying to save enough to take care of her but with no earnings on savings I doubt it happens and we may need help.
I am compassionate to those of lessor means and suffering and I see more then I have ever seen.
We are survivors and will but guess what we are also liberals. I'm sorry that so many think less of folks like us. We think those who are poor, sick, or disabled should have help if they need it.
We see the source of all this as the outsourcing of all the good jobs so the job creators could become filthy rich on the backs of poor people in other countries. By doing so they have deprived our country of the means for people to make a living, to pay taxes, to not have to resort to relief, to have a better life for they and their kids. And I don't see it getting better unless punitive taxes are imposed on imports to bring it back. Its amazing everything here prospered before when high wages and taxes were paid and now we are suffering.
So hate away, I'm a liberal and a moderate one, not radical in anyway, yet many of you still won't like me. How short sighted and bigoted.
