recently purchased property at RV resort / gated community. purchased as raw property and it is being partially cleared. I will be building an RV pad with hook-ups as a seasonal RV storage / use. lake front, in the middle of the forest...awesome. perfect for bug-out. but i digress.
i want to have an on-site climate controlled storage building for food preps and property maintenance stuff. has anybody built anything like this? maybe 12x16 or so?
would you use a portable storage building and just secure it and run power to it, or a stick built building? of course the cost difference is significant.
We took a 14 x 24 building and walled it into sections, insulated the absolute fire out of one third, insulated the other 2/3 like normal humans and popped in a window a/c. Heat is our killer here, you may be able to keep it cooler with other methods depending on your heat and humidity.
We went with a pre-fab building shell because as long as it was on skids it is not part of the real property and is not added to our property taxes and is insured in a different category. The insurance difference won't help me with the preps part of the storage because I'd never give them the inventory list, but it would with the other side of the building where my sewing and quilting equipment lives.
I would be inclined to build this structure very sturdy. Have considered doing this at home and would want to do the same thing. Even more important for a seasonally occupied location where looters would have more time uninterrupted to try and breach your bldg.
Yes steel framed doors etc cost more but if it slows them down maybe your stuff won't get looted in your absence.
A beautified shipping container would be pretty cost effective ....though you'd need to skin the outside (for appearances) and put a simple roof so it would look like a shed.
This could still be portable structure but durable enough to keep away low rent types and be water tight and secure. One no more than 20 ft long could store a ton of stuff.
If you aren't on the property full time, security may be an issue.
