I had 2 of these filters and the instructions said to shake them periodically to extend the life. http://shop.monolithic.com/products/just-water-ceramic-drip-filter
I decided to shake one and it just cracked open around the base spewing charcoal everywhere.
The ceramic shell is only 1/4" thick and the rest filled with charcoal. They are very fragile...do not buy these.
I'll order some Berkey elements from our site sponser.
Had a similar experience. I ordered two of them and one showed up with
a crack around part of the base. Should have returned it but it just didn't
seem worth the effort. I put some epoxy over the crack and put the
filter on the shelf as a last resort backup.
I ordered some Berkeys after that experience. They're also ceramic
so I know they're not bullet-proof, but at least they managed to make
it through the shipping process in one piece.
The Monolithic filters seem to have a cheaper price, but they get you
pretty good for shipping. By the time you figure that in, you can come
pretty close to their price on a Berkey filter instead. Not wanting to
bad-mouth Monolithic too bad since they seem to do some good work
with providing filters to the needy in the third world, but I guess I
gotta give the nod to the Berkey when I buy some more filters in
the future.
I'm sure they would want to know about their product failures so they could fix them.
I would not dismiss them so readily and it could be worth it to contact them.
The Berkeys rule but I have several ways to filter water.
My 2cents
